Engine
The main engine of this deck is the Zada, Hedron Grinder + Silverfur Partisan combo, where you cast 1-cost buff instants on Zada, Hedron Grinder to trigger each Silverfur Partisan on the field to create a 2/2 green Wolf token for each Wolf or Werewolf targeted by an instant copy that was created. Even if you don't have a lot of Wolf or Werewolf creatures on the field initially, targeting Zada, Hedron Grinder with one cheap instant after another on the same turn will quickly produce a stupid amount of buffed wolves. The beauty of this deck is that while it's building up to this combo, it's also keeping your opponent on their toes by making them deal with cheap Werewolves that buff each other really well.
The Cards
Main engine card. Even without Zada on the field, any removal cast by your opponent will trigger Silverfur to give you a replacement 2/2 wolf token.
Main engine card. Even without Silverfur, it's great for boosting your field.
Mainline defense against fliers, and his transformed version is even better.
Excellent card to have in your opening hand, especially if you're first player. It gets in a swing for 1 on turn 1, then it turns into a 2/2 menace if your opponent doesn't have a turn 1 play. Solid aggro.
Like Village Messenger, this is great to have in an opening hand. It gives you that mana boost and her flip-side gives you even more. If your opponent doesn't have a turn 2 play, this card can get you to 5 mana at turn 3.
Boosts humans? Check. Flips with werewolves to keep them boosted and then spawns wolf tokens? Check. Cheap? Check. Nothing bad to say here.
For an aggro deck, it's hard to say no to a 3/2 haste with such a good transform side.
You're probably never going to get a chance to do her -6, but it's still nice to have her for the wolf spawning and boosting.
Works well with ZadaFur combo to give newly created wolves haste. Just make sure you don't use it on Zada if you have more creatures than cards in your library.
Works well with ZadaFur combo because your total number of creatures potentially skyrockets before it resolves.
Great removal for a wolf/werewolf deck. I himmed and hawed at removal such as
Lightning Bolt or
Lightning Axe, but the point of this deck is to have a lot of wolves on the field. If you don't, you have bigger problems than this card being useless. If you do, this removal works better at removing large creatures than a
Lightning Bolt ever could.
I'd say for an aggro deck based around Trample, a colorless land that can give a creature a power boost at any moment is worth having.
The Stack
Some debate may occur in games with this deck based on misunderstandings about what goes on the stack, so here's an example of what happens when you cast one of each buff instant on Zada, Hedron Grinder in a single turn. The example starts assuming you have Zada, Hedron Grinder, Silverfur Partisan, and two other Wolf/Werewolf creatures under your control.
Titan's Strength goes on the stack.
Zada, Hedron Grinder's ability triggers and creates 3 copies of Titan's Strength that go on the stack and target each other creature on the field.
3 out of the 4 creatures under your control are Wolves or Werewolves, so Silverfur Partisan's ability triggers 3 times and spawns 3 green 2/2 wolf tokens.
All 4 Titan's Strength instances on the stack now get resolved one by one. Each targeted creature receives +3/+1 until end of turn and you may Scry 4 times. Note that no Titan's Strength copies are made for the newest 3 wolves, and so do they do not get +3/+1 until end of turn and you cannot Scry for them.
Might of the Masses goes on the stack.
Zada, Hedron Grinder's ability triggers and creates 6 copies of Might of the Masses that go on the stack and target each other creature on the field.
6 out of the 7 creatures under your control are Wolves or Werewolves, so Silverfur Partisan's ability triggers 6 times and spawns 6 green 2/2 wolf tokens.
All 7 Might of the Masses instances on the stack now get resolved one by one. Each targeted creature receives +13/+13 until end of turn, because the wolf tokens created by Silverfur Partisan were created before any instance of Might of the Masses resolved so they count towards your total number of creatures. However, no copies of Might of the Masses is made for the newest 6 wolves, so they do not get +13/+13 until end of turn.
Expedite goes on the stack.
Zada, Hedron Grinder's ability triggers and creates 12 copies of Expedite that go on the stack and target each other creature on the field.
12 out of the 13 creatures under your control are Wolves or Werewolves, so Silverfur Partisan's ability triggers 12 times and spawns 12 green 2/2 wolf tokens.
All 13 Expedite instances on the stack now get resolved one by one. Each targeted creature receives Haste and you may draw 13 cards. Note that no Expedite copies are made for the 12 newest wolf tokens, and so they do not receive Haste and you cannot draw for them.
Sideboard
If you're getting hit hard with fliers and
Daybreak Ranger
isn't doing enough on that front,
Vines of the Recluse
is the card for you. A 1-cost instant for +1/+2, Reach, and untap is as good as gold. As a bonus, it synergizes well with the Zada, Hedron Grinder + Silverfur Partisan combo; just swing at your opponent with all your creatures and then watch the look on their face as they swing at you on their turn and suddenly your entire field untaps and now has Reach.
If you're playing against another aggro deck, Quest for Renewal may be a better enchantment choice since it is essentially a kind of Vigilance. Against a deck of mana removal, Cryptolith Rite could help.
Against a removal or control deck, I like Vines of Vastwood in combination with Zada, Hedron Grinder. Remember that hexproof only prevents opponents from targeting your creatures, so you're not screwing your combo over by hexproofing your board. If your opponent has a lot of artifact/enchantments,
Gleeful Sabotage
comes in handy.
I like Domri Rade because he's cheap, can help you grab Zada, Hedron Grinder or Silverfur Partisan, and gives your opponent something to worry about if he reaches +7. He may be a good alternative to Arlinn Kord
depending on how fast your opponent's deck is.
Maybeboard
Full Moon's Rise is essentially a cheaper and weaker Howlpack Resurgence. However, its sacrifice ability could be worth it to punch your way through your opponent's creatures, especially if you combo it by casting
Irresistible Prey
on Zada, Hedron Grinder before attacking.
Harness the Storm synergizes well with the engine, but has a hard time being relevant when it's drawn. With Titan's Strength and Expedite, you should stick with relying on draws to cast more instants on Zada, Hedron Grinder rather than looking to your graveyard. Also, I've always run into situations where I always have something I could be better spending my mana on than Harness the Storm. It could work in specific situations, but if your combo is going well then you should be already obliterating your opponents with cards in your hand.
Immerwolf is pretty good since it buffs and locks down Werewolves into their transformed state. However, it's hard to justify freeing up cards to put a decent amount of these guys in when I already have Geier Reach Bandit
and I much prefer her 3/2 Haste.
Ulrich of the Krallenhorde
and
Huntmaster of the Fells
are simply too mana-costly for this deck but they could work well in a multiplayer game where your werewolves will be frequently switching back and forth between their human and transformed states.
