Sideboard

The deck uses 2 resilient threats to keep the pressure through our sweepers. We also have a a lot of 1 to 1 removal to keep out opponent's at bay in between sweepers. We can finish the opponent through simple pressure from value creatures.

Liliana makes sure that our Mutilate stays relevant throughout the game, gives us constant ammo to bring back Bloodghast, and even operates as creature removal and pump to close out games.

The sideboard packs a ton of options that are relevant against different types of match-ups. Slaughter Games and Duress are good for combo. Rakdos Charm is good against Twin, Tron, Living Dead, and Affinity. Slaughter Gmaes is also good against Tron. Duress is good versus control. The land destruction is good versus Tron. Victim of Night and Mutilate help improve our Aggro/Mid-range matchups as well. We are already strong versus Aggro/Mid-range game 1 and even better post-sideboard. Our weakest matchups have upwards of 9 options to bring in from the sideboard which nearly guarantees we will see at least 1 or 2 options per game!

I added Bloodghast back to the deck in the sideboard. I know that seems like an odd inclusion but I had an epiphany the other day. One of the things I like about this deck was the ability to win fast and also play the control route. I couldn't always do both and Bloodghast is good at fast but not at control. However, there are certain matches where I need fast. Tron is one of those. The game plan against Tron is now to side out all sweepers and Molten Vortex. We bring in Bloodghast, the last Gatekeeper, and 3 Molten Rain. The idea is that Rain helps us keep the opponent off of Tron but also nukes them for a little bit in the Process. Bloodghast is fast damage. Gatekeeper is also another 2 drop to speed up the clock.

There are other decks where a similar strategy is extremely effective. Jund is a good example of that. Jund wins through dealing with your threats. They can't ever really deal with Bloodghast efficiently. Molten Vortex isn't as effective against Jund because they run Abrupt Decay. Decay also hits Ghast but so what? Ghast comes back where Vortex doesn't. Gatekeeper is awesome card advantage against Jund. Its very often a 2-for-1 since they lose a creature and a removal spell dealing with it. This speeds up our list and taxes their removal to the brink.
