How to become a dragonmaster

Ever wanted to become a dragonmaster? Be ready to cast powerful and impactful creatures that will burn alive and eat your opponents.

Since I started plying magic, I always wanted to have a deck built around dragons. My dream came true in 2010, when I created my first Dragon deck. At that time I was very naïve, so I didn't understand mana curve propperly, making me have alot of problems having a successful experience with the deck, as it was full of 7 mana costed creatures. When Dragons of Tarkir came out, I couldn't be happier. Dragons in a lot of different color combinations? Hell yeah! I rushed to my LGS and bought a fat box of the set. There I opened Dragonlord Atarka and Harbinger of the Hunt . Furthermore, I was able to trade with a friend of mine to get Atarka, World Render . I had the idea then to add to my deck to add my sweet gruul dragons. I also took advantage of the new colour to get me some ramp in the deck. I also splashed in order to be able to put Sarkhan Unbroken in the deck. Then I started changing the deck making it what it is today. It was very sad to remove from the mainboard my old expensive dragons, specially Balefire Dragon , but my deck had to become a lot faster to do stuff. This is now my ultimate dragon deck!!!

I will order them by mana cost and explain why they are in the deck.

1.- Thunderbreak Regent : This is by far the best dragon with a CMC of 4. A 4/4 red flyer for 4 mana? Sure. Being this a tribal deck, it makes his ability a lot more valuable, because if you get your opponents low enough, this dragon will disencourage them to throw their removal. With the help of our ramp package, you usually cast it at turn 3. In conclusion, it is a really good early beater with a very impactful ability.

2.- Glorybringer : This is the newest addition to the deck. It has haste, and you should almost everytime exert him, because its a free removal spell, and this deck needs them to be able to swing without the fear of dying. One of the all-stars of the deck for sure, but I would recommend waiting for it to rotate out of standard before purchasing it.

3.- Thundermaw Hellkite : One of the best dragons in this deck. Just his stats (5/5, flying, haste) make him a pain in the ass for the oponent but the main reason why it is in this deck is for the combos. The last ability is a game changer. It destroys any chumpblockers the opponents may have, giving you the opportunity to deliver the final blow.

4.- Atarka, World Render : This is the most synergistic dragon of the deck. If your opponents do not kill her before she can turn sideways and don't have flyers, they lose the game 100% of the time. By the time you cast her, you should have at least another dragon on board, so her ability of giving double strike is going to be so important to close out the game. Furthermore, she has trample, so good luck for your opponent trying to chumpblock her. The true star of the deck and a really good removal dark hole.

5.- Dragonlord Atarka : There's not much to say about the card that isn't self-explanatory. 8/8 trampler that deals 5 damage distributed as you choose is just good. Never feel bad tapping out to cast her, as she can win the game by herself.

1.- Dragonmaster Outcast : He draws removal, can act as a chumpblocker, and makes use of you ramp to flood your board with dragons. It is a piece of a really good card draw engine. Cast it early and make your opponent panic or cast it late and make use of the tokens.

2.- Sarkhan Unbroken : Mana fixing and card draw, a dragon token to protect himself... He is an all-round good planeswalker, and he is the reason the deck is temur and not gruul. If you manage to use his ultimate you will be the happiest man or woman alive and the game will be over for your oppnents. I have only manage to pull his ultimate off only twice, and its just hilarious.

1.- Dragonlord's Servant : It's a solid 2-drop that makes casting dragons cheaper and 3 toughness is good enough to make it a good blocker aswell, so there is no reason why the deck wouldn't want to run 4 of them. Our ideal hand should have at least 1 of them.

2.- Rampant Growth : Just the usual green ramp. They fix our mana and enable Dragonmaster Outcast and Nissa, Vastwood Seer   a turn earlier.

3.- Rattleclaw Mystic : Mana fixing in early game and you can pretend it's a big morph creature in late game. If you don't have dragons in yur hand (something that shouldn't happen) it may be better to cast this instead of a Dragonlord's Servant .

4.- Nissa, Vastwood Seer  : When you cast her, it replaces itself with a forest and if she survives and turns into a planeswalker, her +1 ability is going to be your best friend. She can also protect herself, and her ultimate is nice, but the main reson the deck has her is the ramp and card draw.

1.- Serum Visions : A very good blue spell, so I was almost obliged to make room for this card. Helps you dig for dragons and fixes your subsequent draws.

2.- Draconic Roar : Just think of it as a double Lightning Bolt in this deck. Sure, revealing a dragon is not ideal, but you will probably cast it sonn anyways. You can always replace it with a playset of Lightning Bolt if you feel like it, works well too.

3.- Sarkhan's Triumph : Its a dragon tutor, so it can search us some win conditions or pieces for our combos. The deck only runs 2 because there is no room for a playset, otherwise it would. Really good card in the deck, and it is an instant, which is very important too.

4.- Temur Ascendancy : Haste and self-replacement for all our dragons. It has some hidden sinergies too so good enchantment overall. With the ramp the deck has there shouldn't be any problem casting this enchantment.
