Morophon, the Boundless: Our commander and my favorite card from Modern Horizons (I’m joking my real favorite is Headless Specter). He is a tribal machine and the only commander for this absolute meme of a deck. He gives a relevant cost reduction and an even more relevant buff to our Liches to make ‘em dummy thicc. Don’t lie to me, I know you’ve thought about thicc Storrev. In addition, I think Morophon likes it better in this deck instead of all those “everything tribal decks” because honestly, you guys think you’re sooooo unique but let’s be honest, it’s a cliche now. I’ve faced more Morophon decks that are everything tribal than weird janky tribes or even good tribes. Unpopular opinion, but it’s true.
Anathemancer: Oh you rich pigs think your $2000 mana base scares me? Cower before the might of my repeatable kill spell!!!! This card is fun in so many ways and in a deck with a reanimator subtheme, “enters the battlefield” abilities are really good. Considering my playgroup this card has dealt anywhere between 1-15 damage and it’s a decent blocker because your opponents will be scared to kill it.
Apprentice Necromancer: Such a beautiful fusion of what this deck does. Zombie Wizard AND it reanimates something? Is he single? I’m joking of course he looks like a hot topic shopping spree gone wrong. Boom roasted. This card is fantastic because it doesn’t exile the creature or itself, setting up more graveyard shenanigans and he has a 1/1 body too so he definitely fits in the deck. Not to mention, his flavor text shows he’s dedicated and I can appreciate that.
Blood Scrivener: Another in the long line of two mana cards, this guy is actually a sleeper in the deck. Due to the low amount of card draw in the deck, we tend to empty our hand relatively quickly. That’s where this son of a lich shines, able to refuel our hand quickly and at the low low cost of 1 life. He’s also a 2/1 which means worse comes to worse you chump block with him.
Bone Miser: This card and Varina, Lich Queen go together like musicals and staying up ‘til 3 in the morning (trust me, I’m experienced) Mana producer, token generator, card draw engine all wrapped up in one edgy looking hobo. Not bad for a 4/4 either, it makes a decent beater in a pinch.
Boris Devilboon: Wow is it just me or was Legends unreasonable on every side of the spectrum? This card is actual crap and that’s a fact. For $20.00 I could buy a fucking commander deck for the cost of this guy. But hey, he’s family, and by that I mean he’s a Zombie Wizard. Don’t believe me punk? Go check the gatherer page why don’t ya! He makes tokens if you give him enough time so he isn’t entirely useless. He’s good as a mana sink? I just wish they’d make a foil version with tokens. On the note of tokens, I’m gonna see if Card Kingdom will send me a Minor Demon token with my next order!
Cabal Interrogator: Welp, it ain’t ideal but it is what it is. Hand hate is good, and any kind you can get is usually worth the cost. Another benefit is that YOU get to choose the card they discard and get information on the rest of their hand. Not bad for an uncommon from Scourge.
Calculating Lich: “No no Murray, I’m not political, I’m...I’m just tryin to make people laugh” -Joker. Unlike Joker, Calculating Lich is very political. This card is really fun to use in 4 person games. In addition, it’s a 5/5 with Menace that chunks in some serious damage. I’m almost tempted to call this a win con by itself.
Coffin Queen: For how much this card has been reprinted, it should not be $9.00 and that’s a fact. Despite this, she is quite good. Reanimating anything from any graveyard for 3 mana is really solid AND if you untap her, it’s exiled, therefore cutting off access for your greedy graveyard opponents. They think they’re so high up with their “Rise of the Dark Realms” well we’ll show ‘em! Or, at least, I will.
Corpse Augur: Card draw is pretty low in this deck, so a creature that can draw us an enormous amount of cards and is repeatable with reanimation is incredible. In addition he has high power making him one of the best blockers in the deck.
Corpse Connoisseur: Who needs entomb, a $13 sorcery, when you have this $0.30 lich? This is probably the question you’re asking yourself right now. HAHA loser, you spent too much money on one card. gives you the L This card is essentially two entombs and with all the reanimation we have, it’s incredibly versatile. I’d like to see your entomb do THAT.
Corpse Harvester: Woah, this card is amazing. Ramp and tutor stapled together? Yes please! This zombie is incredible in the deck because he can sacrifice creatures to recur them later and fetches the means to recur the card you sacrificed. To sum it up, he’s one of the best cards in the deck. Also the art is super metal, I might need a playmat of it.
Custodi Lich: BOW TO THE KING! Just like Paliano would like, this card is great for politics. Nobody wants to have to sacrifice their creatures so they won’t attack, or you make deals so they can swing and you’ll take the damage so you swing at them and make someone sacrifice a pesky creature. I’ve had some incredible fun with this guy. #lichbros
Death Baron: My favorite card in the deck, though that might be because of the alter I got from Boliaart. It’s awesome and beautiful so yeah, anytime I draw and or play it is a good day. This card is also one of the best cards due to it’s buffs. +1/+1 AND Deathtouch should never be underestimated. It makes blocks and attacks harder for opponents. It can also give that extra power for a final swing.
Dralnu, Lich Lord: Flavor = 100; Abilities = 100. Simply put, Dralnu is an incomprehensible value engine. Flashback all your important instants and sorceries like Buried Alive, Command the Dreadhorde, or Kodama's Reach. His presence on the battlefield is truly awe inspiring as your opponents helplessly watch you play the flashback precon!!! Be careful around burn spells or Blasphemous Act.
Dreadhorde Arcanist: I hate when standard affects commander prices, but hey I guess Feather, the Redeemed decks are a thing? This card is part of the card synergy of Dreadhorde Arcanist and Hate Weaver. The weaver pumps up the arcanist and you cast tons of spells for free!
Eternal Skylord: The Amass mechanic is pretty good all things considered and this 3/3 Zombie Wizard brings a 2/2 flyer with him! The ability is also relevant for things like Lich Lord of Unx, Varina, Lich Queen, and Bone Miser.
Fatestitcher: Solid value engine? Or grandma? Much like my grandma this card is pretty tough and comes back from the dead every so often (love you grams!). The untap value he provides is really fantastic, allowing you to ramp faster or make instant speed blockers.
Gleaming Overseer: I’m not saying this art is amazing but having your chariot pulled by a zombie horse is pretty metal. Among the amass cards in this deck, this guy is the best. Menace AND hexproof on all my zombie tokens is absolutely nuts and like the other amass cards, he applies to all our other tokens too.
Grudge Keeper: So this is where we get freaky because guess what? There are no cards that require a vote in this deck! This is a side effect of putting every lich ever into this deck. The card isn’t awful? With Morophon, the Boundless it’s one mana for a 3/2. Also, who knows if someone is playing a Will of the Council deck, then it’s a powerhouse!
Hate Weaver: When I first built this deck, I wasn’t expecting Hate Weaver to be that good. He’s proved me wrong. The combo with Dreadhorde Arcanist is legit, being able to cast any spell from my graveyard is ridiculous. I’ve resolved Buried Alive twice in a turn into Command the Dreadhorde for the win so don’t sleep on him. He also makes combat math and blocks difficult for you and your opponent, shared suffering!
Havengul Lich: Value to the max. Do you know how satisfying it is to reanimate a guys Urza, Lord High Artificer with a card that’s $1.79? Incredibly satisfying. The cost reduction we get with Morophon, the Boundless applies to the spells you’re casting as well! This cards performance has earned him the 2019 BEST LICH AWARD
Jarad, Golgari Lich Lord: Thicc boi hours over here. Jard is almost always the largest creature you’ll cast in a game. I’ve gotten him to about 20/20 once, good times. His sacrifice outlet is amazing because it allows for some serious shenanigans with Living Death and doubles as a win con. Not to mention the synergy with Altar of Dementia.
Josu Vess, Lich Knight: Have you ever cast Josu Vess with his kicker cost? Cause I have, and let me tell you, it’s the best feeling ever. This card is bonkers, not only does our deck ramp like crazy, but Josu provides fodder for sacrifice, good interaction with our zombie lords, and an instant board presence.
Kheru Lich Lord: Ah yes, more reanimation, sensing a theme? This card is good for several reasons, one of them being if Morophon is out, it costs three mana for a 5/5. The ability itself is very relevant. Sometimes, you just want a creature back. It may not be a bomb but it’s solid.
Lich Lord of Unx: “Hey kid, how’d you like to win the game?” “I’d like that very much!” takes out Lich Lord of Unx “Here ya go kid hehe* Pretty straightforward, your opponents answer this or lose the game. That’s it. The tokens also synergize with our amass cards.
Nekusar, the Mindrazer: There’s a reason this card has 1680 decks on EDHREC. Our deck may not abuse him, but the additional card advantage, coupled with a consistent damage outlet sets us a few paces ahead in the game. Funny story with Nekusar: my friend was playing his “Drawing Conclusions” deck where the whole point was to draw cards, I dropped Nekusar and well, let’s just say he didn’t have a fun game that day.
Nightscape Apprentice: Our first buddy in the nightscape cycle is pretty bad, I mean he’s sort of good with etb creatures like our amass stuff or Sedraxis Alchemist, but he’s really weak. I’ve been told first strike is important, but I don’t think I’ve used that mode yet, maybe I’ll try it sometime…
Nightscape Battlemage: Utility is the name of the game and boy does this card delivers. Our first kicker cost is color restricted but still hits 80% of creatures, making it a very solid removal spell or protection spell. The second mode is to get rid of Dark Depths, Cabal Stronghold, Glacial Chasm, Field of the Dead, Strip Mine, Maze of Ith and more. Sometimes I destroy people’s ABUR dual lands just because I enjoy spiting the rich and greedy.
Nightscape Master: Ah, one of the unsung heroes of the EDH format. Having a repeatable shock and unsummon at your command is so underestimated until you stop someone from winning the game with your four mana 2/2. I love this cad, and I’ve lost count of how many times it’s come through in the clutch.
Phylactery Lich: Indestructible is good, especially on a 5/5. That’s it, that’s what this card does. Want to block anything? Use this, easy peasy lemon squeezy, and for your opponents, difficult difficult lemon difficult.
Scornful AEther-Lich: Sometimes the board is stalled and you just need to get some damage through. This card does that job pretty relentlessly and if you have Morophon out, you almost always guarantee 3 damage every turn. Add in the lord effects and you get freaky. One annoying thing is always reminding people what fear does, like almost every game I have to remind someone.
Sedraxis Alchemist: So after looking at this list, you’re probably wondering why there’s like one removal spell, and the spell itself is Lich's Caress. Well, we are running more than one removal spell, and this guy is one of them! Returning nonland permanents is GOOD, why do I keep having to tell people this? Destroying it just fuels reanimator decks and exile removal costs too much and doesn’t fit in the deck. This card works and definitely shows that you don’t need the best removal to make a deck good.
Soul Diviner: The rate on this card is already good; ⅔ for 2? Sign me the hell up! The ability is pretty great and synergizes mostly with our amass stuff but also Grimire of the Dead if you need to diffuse a situation or it’s being removed anyway. In a way, that could be an interesting engine.
Spellweaver Eternal: Not even I will try to make this sound good, but prowess is a good ability and the body works fine with our lords. The art is really nice though, I love having non-black liches. Wait, that sounded racist. I know! I love when Liches are diverse and spread throughout the color pie! There we go, much more acceptable.
Storrev, Devkarin Lich: Many will argue that value is just quick combos and even faster kills. I however believe that real value lies in something you can accrue over time in the form of card advantage or damage etc… Guess who fills both of those qualities? She does. Also, going off of what I said earlier, I want to remind you that THICC Storrev is a thing. All in all, this card is fantastic because she’s a very low-key value source and a good source for combat damage.
Tomebound Lich: You know what they say: “All Lich tribal decks need a little card draw.” Luckily this guy is just that, and with a repeatable looting effect, he can fuel our graveyard strategy further. Lifelink, deathtouch, and higher than average toughness means he won’t be killed by some stupid saproling token, and will still gain us advantage in terms of life, works very well with our Lich effects like Lich's Mastery and Nefarious Lich.
Undead Augur: Card draw is just so needed in this deck, and boy Undead Augur provides. Living Death and opponent’s board wipes become gleeful celebrations with your newly stacked hand. He’s also a 2/2 for two black which is a decent rate, especially with our lord's out.
Underrealm Lich: A lot of people underestimate this deck because they think there are no powerful lich creatures, and this card simply proves them wrong. This card does it all: filtering every draw, ensuring we just don’t lose the game if we mill our library, turning itself indestructible, and a great attacker, like damn calm down bruh. This card is a powerhouse, it’s that simple. I love playing this guy after I mill myself with Altar of Dementia and cast a Living Death. Very good insurance against losing the game.
Varina, Lich Queen: If there was one card that convinced me to play liches, it was this one. Varina is incredibly stacked, hell I considered her for the commander of this deck. Looting for every zombie that attacks is amazing and not only does the lifegain buff us, it works in tandem with our Lich effects. Token production synergizes with our Amass Liches too. If I had to choose one card to represent the power level of this deck, I’d choose Varina. Also, like I mentioned earlier, Bone Miser + Varina, Lich Queen
is a very real combo that closes out games.
Vindictive Lich: Remember kids, spiting your friends is all in good fun! Excellent blocker, excellent attacker, and all around a big middle finger to your opponents. What more could you ask for?
Vizier of the Scorpion: I’ve explained why deathtouch is good a million times already. This card is also really great because it enters with another zombie that already has deathtouch.
Yixlid Jailer: I played this card without thinking when the Commander 2019 precons came out. I was facing my friends precon flashback deck and he just about smacked me when I dropped this. There are a lot of graveyard decks out there, this stops them from being abusive and has great art to boot.
