Scalable hydras generated from some ramp, lots of counter acceleration, looking for (moderately) budgeted suggestions.

Ideal plays:

  1. Forest and Llanowar Elves
  2. Forest, Gyre Sage, and Hardened Scales
  3. Land, Nettle Sentinel evolves Gyre Sage (+2), Hardened Scales, Rosheen Meanderer evolves Gyre Sage (now +5)
  4. If we hit all our land drops, that should give us potentially 14 mana for X spells (10 regular). With that, using 4 mana for Corpsejack Menace is a net gain, as it essentially cuts X spells in half. Now we can play Primordial Hydra for 10(8/8), 2× Hardened Scales adds 2 (10/10), and Corpsejack Menace doubles it (20/20 with Trample)!
  5. Next upkeep Primordial Hydra gets counters doubled (40/40), +2 from Scales (42/42), then those 22 counters get doubled from Corpsejack. Suddenly you are swinging for game with a 64/64 Trampler :)

That would be an insane sequence though, here's a much more probable start.

  1. Hardened Scales
  2. Gyre Sage
  3. Renegade Krasis which evolves Gyre Sage +2
  4. Rosheen Meanderer evolves Gyre Sage again (+4), evolves Renegade Krasis (+2), who's ability boosts Gyre Sage again (now +6). With Gyre's 6 mana, lay down a 6/6 Hungering Hydra which, you guessed it, triggers Renegade +4 now and boosts Gyre yet again (up to +8).
  5. Now we have 15-17 mana depending on land drops, and we can lay down a 14/14 to 16/16 double striking Savageborn Hydra which will evolve everything again to drop something even bigger next turn. At this point we have a 13/14, 9/8, 4/4, 10/10, and 14/14+ making up the board presence.
