Everyone knows a quadrilogy has twelve parts. And this one's gonna be yuge.

Since the lockdown began, I started playing EDH on more digital fronts. And this greatly increased my tolerance for higher-power level cards. So, expect this to get a little closer to a 9 when it's finished. It's no Edric or Ayara, and by the nature of the commander, probably never will be. All my decks that get built from scratch start weak, and when it comes to paper they often stay that way for personal reasons. CEDH people aren't very fun to hang around. It takes a long time to build an EDH deck in paper, and before the advent of internet trading, used to take longer. Crushing your friends in person isn't as sustainable as crushing your enemies online, so there was no point min-maxing everything.

But, in a platform where you aren't forced to hear a mumbling, uninvested monotone voice call out every trigger and flick every card, and you can easily copy and paste and share decks at will, I got a lot more experience with the top end of EDH and some more concrete ideas for how to build my own mono-black. The obvious combo of Aetherflux and Bolas's Citadel was my favorite discovery of this year, and putting Necropotence on top of it makes it foolproof. You can unclog anything you want with it. I originally eschewed its use entirely as a rule; Necro was for unscrupulous Zur players only. But being able to stack your deck at will, and at any point in the game, makes things a whole lot easier with my favorite combo.

I know what you think I'm going to say; that this deck is going to be The Best, Maybe Ever, but it can't be the best, the deck is too divided between what it wants to do and what it has to do. If this were Ayara it would be a slim 9.5 storm death machine that could go to war with Russia, but instead we have to have a towering Voltron a la ye olde Eldrazi. He's an unlikely choice, but (for the meme and for originality) he's the best choice we've got.

Not to say it isn't extremely fun to ramp with every black mana doubler in print and knock people out of the game by saying "MAGA!" I figured I'd get one built before the impending second wave of Sensitivity Bans(tm) saw him yeeted from the market just for his name. Unlike Sen Triplets, this one WILL make people's heads explode.
