A midrange based discard deck that controls the early game by taking out key cards that can disrupt your gameplan with Inquisition of Kozilek and Thoughtseize. From there you have several different routes of victory either pseudo burning them out with Shrieking Affliction, Blightning, Lightning Bolt and Wrench Mind or controlling the game with cards like Terminate and Languish using Phyrexian Arena as a card advantage engine until you can cast Phyrexian Obliterator or Demigod of Revenge to secure the win.

Sideboard Show

In the Sideboard we have Flaying Tendrils and Engineered Explosives to deal with a horde of cheap creatures (Night of Souls' Betrayal helps too.)Nihil Spellbomb to deal with graveyard shenanigans and Kolaghan's Command to help deal with troublesome artifacts.Blood Moon is an easy card for us to play around and is crippling to many decks, especially when they don't see it coming.Grim Lavamancer for grindier matchups where the board is clogged with creatures to reliably force damage through.

Other cards that could be very powerful in this deck: Show

Liliana of the Veil is extremely powerful in grinding out games although with our only source of card advantage is hefty discard and 3 copies of Phyrexian Arena it is more difficult to lock opponents out of the game. Her -2 isn't that great of a deal when you consider the copious amount of removal we have for creatures that land on the battlefield.

Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet is not in the deck because I couldn't find room for her. A plan would be to get rid of the Shrieking Afflictions and add her in for a grindier deck.

Young Pyromancer is an option in a more spell heavy deck to generate a massive amount of tokens if left unchecked. Even so he could still be decent giving you 3 or 4 bodies for 2 mana.

Bloodghast for a more aggressive deck. He could consistently get in for 2 damage each turn if you use your removal to get rid of creatures but I opted for a more top heavy late game with several big, hard hitting creatures instead of small recursive ones.

Why play this over other midrange decks that are already tried and proven to be extremely powerful (Jund, Junk, B/G Oblitarock)? Show

I think that this deck is very powerful in the few games that I have tested with it having copious removal to get rid of big troublesome creatures before finishing the game with Phyrexian Obliterator. It seems faster than B/G midrange decks (unless they stick a huge Tarmogoyf) and we still have the long term staying power with Shrieking Affliction and Demigod of Revenge.

Matchups (Not yet tested, this is all theory) Show

Jund: This seems about 50/50 (which is probably one of Junds greatest strengths) but if you can keep their big threats off the board and land your own you should be fine. The discard engine should be very powerful in keeping them from locking you out of the game.

Affinity: This also seems about 50/50, remove and discard their threats and you should have a decent time of it. Kolaghan's Command and multiple wraths should be good here.

Tron: As with other midrange decks probably our worst matchup. If you remove all of their threats and discard their planeswalkers you should have a decent chance.

Infect: This one seems like a very good matchup. As an extremely fast combo deck we don't stand much chance if they get the nut draw. Keep hands with removal and a turn 1 Thoughtseize or Inquisition of Kozilek should be crippling.

Burn: This Matchup seems difficult as there isn't much lifegain in black and red. I think that if you shock yourself minimally and kill their creatures you should be in decent shape. Discard is perfect here and it slows them down a lot.

Merfolk: This matchup seems very easy. We have many removal spells for their lords and multiple wraths to deal with their horde.

Jeskai Nahiri: This seems difficult as their Nahiri clock is quite quick and we can't do much about it. The best way to go about it would be targeted discard to scrap Nahiri and sticking a early thing to put a clock on them.

Ad Nauseam: A decent matchup as our hand attack can easily take out their combo pieces until they are in topdeck mode. We are favoured once we get a creature and take their hand away.

Delver: We should be good with this matchup as our high amounts of removal can kill Delver of Secrets   and our targeted discard can get rid of their counters and threats so that we can stick our own.

Zoo: We are favoured in this matchup as we have many removal spells and board wipes. Once we get out a creature it should be bigger than theirs in which case we can block until we get another (turns out blocking with Phyrexian Obliterator is pretty good.)

All in all I think that this is a very competitive deck that could be brought to a GP and do just fine. As you can see it has a decent matchup against most of the popular decks in the format and it has multiple paths of victory. Also you get to beat down with a Phyrexian Obliterator which is one of the best feelings ever.
