Modern Loam Pox
Deck Description
I originally started playing Modern MTG a few years back and was always more of the aggro player. In the recent months I built Legacy Lands and realized that attrition control builds are decks that I truly enjoy. Loam Pox was the first Modern attrition build that I have seen in recent times that caught my attention. Have seen some promising online videos of this deck online I decided to give it a try. This is my version of the deck that Rapheal Levy brewed for modern. The version that I am playing is somewhere between his Version 4 and GP Copenhagen list. I feel that his later list started to go away from the attrition style that I like so much. Levy's choice to remove
Lingering Souls
which I was not a fan of, his choice to add
Conflagrate
seemed to give the deck the extra reach that it was missing. Levy has some videos of himself playing the earlier versions of the Loam Pox deck on his Twitch stream.
From the little bit that I have played this deck and the notes that I have read online, I have found out that this deck seems to be the favorite of those who play it. The reviews also pointed to the fact that the deck has one of the most expansive decisions trees in Modern Magic. This however leads to the deck being not quite as forgiving as other Modern decks.
Card Descriptions
Bloodghast
: A creature that can be recurred from the graveyard with a land drop that the deck rarely misses. Allows our deck to put constant pressure on the enemy and with 10 or less life has haste from the graveyard. Deserves 4 slots in the mainboard.
Squee, Goblin Nabob
: A creature that come back each upkeep for just being in the graveyard. Makes for great
Zombie Infestation
fodder. Plus everyone likes to see an opponents face when a
Squee, Goblin Nabob
beats them down.
Vengeful Pharaoh: This card is a sleeper bomb, many times opponents have attacked in forgetting that he was in the graveyard only to later realize that their creature was destroyed for simply making a poor choice.
Golgari Brownscale
: An all-star in aggro and burn match ups. Can Cripple decks that try to race against us before T4, the two life might seem small and insignificant but can be game breaking when every point of damage counts.
Zombie Infestation
: One of the main components that allows for our attrition engine to function. Allows us to pitch cards that we want to the graveyard while giving the added benefit of making a 2/2 dude. Great for pitching
Bloodghast
,
Squee, Goblin Nabob
,
Lingering Souls
.
Life from the Loam
: Possibly on the best card advantage cards ever printed (yes, I did just say that). It definitely is the best green card advantage card, that has the bonus of being reusable every turn. Allows us to make games grind into the late game where out deck performs best. Makes our
Ghost Quarter
and
Tectonic Edge
recurrable.
Faithless Looting
: 1 CMC red draw spell that lets us decide what we throw into the yard? Sign me up, plus is has flashback. One of the best cards in the deck.
Lingering Souls
: This card does not need much discussion, it is good. Giving us to 1/1 flying blockers in the early game, and being usable even if pitched into graveyard is a pretty sweet bonus.
Smallpox
: A well timed use of this card can be crippling to an opponent putting them in a situation that with our engine online they will not be able to comeback from.
Darkblast
: Another solid dredge card that can help deal with those small pesky creatures, looking at you Young Pyromancer, Delver of Secrets
. A trick I found was this can be casted on upkeep and dredged during your upkeep and casted again during your turn to deal with those creatures that have those 2/2 bodies.
Abrupt Decay
: A very solid card, if its under 3 CMC and not a land this will take care of it.
Conflagrate
: Levy decided to add this card during his playing at GP Copenhagen. Before this addition the deck seemed to be missing some reach, this was the answer. It is not hard to cast a large flashback for 7 to finish someone off with a single blow.
Go for the Throat
: Solid removal, might not be so great if Affinity is rampant in your meta.
Murderous Cut
: Another removal spell. Easy to cast for 1-2 CMC because we can delve easily. Makes dealing with those
Tarmogoyf
easy as pie.
Terminate
: A very good removal spell, for 2 CMC allows us to remove a creature without fear of regeneration.
Flame Jab
: Recurrable 1 damage, is very nice in the deck allowing us to deal will small creatures all day.
Raven's Crime: Recurrable discard that when the engine is online can be a true nightmare for opponents. Allows us to strip hands and make sure cards are never played against us again.
Ghost Quarter
: In a format like modern that tends to lean on the greedy land bases this card does serious work. Many decks run few to zero basics, allowing this to function as a modern legal Strip Mine.
Tectonic Edge
: Same idea as
Ghost Quarter
, allows our deck to keep opponents at a respectable 4 lands and not be able to cast anything crazy that we cannot deal with.
