The meat, on the other hand, has many visitors.

This is my very rough, very budget, and very fun build of Barren Glory EDH.

The goal of the deck is to win using Barren Glory, which requires that, on your upkeep, you both control no permanents and have no cards in hand. A difficult task? Yes. But impossible? Absolutely not.

Chromium, the Mutable was chosen for a few reasons.

  1. It runs white. Which is important.
  2. It runs black and blue. The colors are great support as they both allow for card draw and card discard, as well as access to transmute, which can tutor for important pieces.
  3. He is a discard outlet in the command zone.
  4. Sometimes your wincon is elder dragon beats.
NOTE: I have cut most of the support for this path to victory because of how card-intensive this package is. In a deck with such a specific win condition, we want as many live draws as we can get. Hitting a 2nd Oblivion Ring effect or Worldpurge when we'd rather have ramp or removal is bad. If your meta is slow enough for this, feel free to lean more heavily into this path.

Oblivion Ring, Detention Sphere, and Release to the Wind are all cards that can hold and contain Barren Glory in preparation for you winning combo. Once protected, you can play a board clear, hold priority to both sacrifice your lands and discard your hand, and then pray. Oblivion Ring and Detention Sphere will automatically return Barren Glory back into play, while Release to the Wind requires you to cast it again (albeit for free). Worldpurge and Kaervek's Spite are the best for this approach.

Construct your wincon arround Barren Glory. You can either do this in response to it on the stack or by selectively removing everything else on the battlefield. Casting Kaervek's Spite in response to Barren Glory will set you up right there, although you're left in the dust if opponents have removal. Building the win while Barren Glory is in play is a little more tricky. The best cards for the setup are Renounce and Claws of Gix, since they both have flexibility as to what you can sacrifice.

This is not a budgetless build obviously. The manabase needs some work and certain cards such as Vampiric Tutor and Lion's Eye Diamond definitely belong here but for now this is a template.

Updates Add

The deck still needs a little something. Upgraded the ramp package, added a few boardwipes, and some draw X spells. Looking forward to see how Read the Runes performs specifically. Might swap out Grand Abolisher for Silence, but Abolisher looks better once I inevitably add Muddle the Mixture.
