Sideboard

Started out as a test build around Winding Constrictor as I was expecting to play The Paradox at Greenbelt the first couple weeks of AER. But, since my cards for that deck still haven't arrived, I figured I'd give this a shot. Also, it didn't hurt that Columbus had demonstrated how dominant this deck can be.

My curve is lower than most of the builds that did well at the first AER event, and I'm running more of an energy theme. With the majority of the permanents in Fatal Push range I am also running a bit more protection.

First FNM in AER went extremely well. Probably would've gone better a week earlier when Winding Constrictor would've been more of a "surprise."

Round 1 against GB Delirium/Aggro (1-1-1)

Played against a psuedo-clone of the Columbus GB Aggro Build. Outran them game 1 making a couple huge Longtusk Cubs forcing them to block with their Mindwrack Demons when they dropped late-game. Game 2 Mindwrack Demon came down early and achieved delirium. Flying was clearly an issue for me and I couldn't establish a board that would prevent the demon swinging every turn. Game 3 went long with both of us utilizing all our removal, fortunately for me we hit time and I got the tie. I don't think I'd have won if the game had no time constraints.

Round 2 against Abzan Winding Constrictor (2-0-0)

Turn 2 Transgress the Mind to remove Gideon pretty much locked up Game 1 before it even started. Stuck a turn 7 Verdurous Gearhulk to swing for 8 on turn 8, then dropped Liliana, the Last Hope and used her -2 to pull another hulk from graveyard to force a scoop. Game 2 I started running low on dice from all the counters on my Longtusk Cub.

Round 3 against R/? Spells (2-0-0)

Walking Ballista showed why it has climbed in value so quickly in this matchup. It did a ton of work as removal in Game 1. Game 2 I sideboarded in all my hexproof spells to fizzle any targeted burn and ran away with the game.

Round 4 against Grixis Artifact Control / Cheerios (2-0-0)

Fatal Push and Grasp of Darkness kept Glint-Nest Crane and Sram from getting out of hand. Both games went fairly easy despite their control forcing me into a more mid-game pace of play.

Overall a solid first run, it is clear evasion is a challenge and something my sideboard needs to be able to handle.

Post FNM changes

  • Cut Electrostatic Pummeler for a full playset of Walking Ballista as it performed much better than I anticipated

  • Added an additional Rishkar

  • Cut my instant speed pump/trample spells since Pummeler was out, adding Clip Wings and Aim High to sideboard to help with dealing with fliers.

Not sure if 5 cards is enough to handle the massive aerial attacks of U/W Flash. I expect my local meta to transition into that and Mono-W Servos as both of these run well against me. For this week Winding Constrictor dominated the meta with 4 people (that I know of) running full playsets.
