Sideboard


Merfolk is based aggro/tempo deck with a tribal theme. Individually, the cards are not very strong, but in conjunction they synergize with one another.

The basic strategy is to play Merfolk creatures on curve and then strengthen them with the Merfolk "lords:" (Master of the Pearl Trident, Lord of Atlantis, and Merrow Reejerey). Each of these lords give all other Merfolk +1/+1, and having multiple lords in play make for an overwhelming board state very quickly.

Both Master of the Pearl Trident and Lord of Atlantis grant your Merfolk army "Islandwalk" (they're unblockable if your opponent controls an island). To that end, the deck also plays four copies of Spreading Seas to primarily enable islandwalk for your hoard (while at the same time acting as 'removal' for man-lands and shutting down your opponent's mana base).

Master of Waves is the "hay-maker" of the deck. When he enters play, he will usually bring 5+ elemental tokens with him and usually means game over.

What makes the deck really hum is Aether Vial. This card allows us to cheat Merfolk into play while at the same time leaving mana up for tempo plays. Creatures put into play through Aether Vial are 'uncounterable' due to the fact that they're not being cast. Aether Vial can lead to some really explosive turns, while at the same time messing up your opponent's combat math.

The deck is really strong against the field, really only having difficulty with Affinity and Elves.

The side board features grave yard hate in Relic of Progenitus, removal in Dismember, additional help vs and creatures in Tidebinder Mage, and a counter suite of Negate and Dispel.

Updates Add

Based on the SCG Open last weekend, I'm making some changes to the deck. I think it was a mistake to remove Phantasmal Image from the deck, so he's going back in. Also dropping Ghose Quarter and adding some removal in the form of Dismember back to the main.

The side board is also getting a makeover too. Going to try Chalice of the Void against all of the Burn and Affinity decks out there.

Side Board changes: +3 Chalice of the Void, +1 Unified Will, +2 Hibernation (This is a concession to my LGS, which has an Elves player and a Green Devotion player), -4 Hurkyl's Recall, -2 Dispel
