Based on Jin15's Sac Land Tendrils Primer but with several changes both mainboard and in sideboard.
MAINBOARD
mana sources: 12 saclands (
Ancient Spring
,
Sulfur Vent
and
Geothermal Crevice
); 2
Barbarian Ring
(also creature removal or 2 damage in the face) and 4 Lotus Petal.
accelleration: 4 Dark Ritual, 4 Cabal Ritual and 4
Rite of Flame
.
cantrip/color fixing: 4 Chromatic Star, 1 Chromatic Sphere and 4 Manamorphose.
library manipulation: 4 Gitaxian Probe (also provides information on whether it is safe to go off) and 3 Ponder; 2
Plunge into Darkness
; 1
Ideas Unbound
and 1 Brainstorm to be included in Doomsday piles (see sideboard). NOTE: This deck contains considerably fewer draw spells than in the primer. However, I believe there still is enough draw power left. In total there are 25 cards (including Burning Wish) that cantrip/provide (at least) 1 other card. This means that on the play on turn 3 you can obtain a total of (7+2) / (1 - 25/60) = 15.4 cards, of which 15,4 * (14/60) = 3.6 lands and 11.8 spells, enough for lethal
Tendrils of Agony
.
protection: 2 Duress to remove counters and especially Mindbreak Trap, Stifle and Flusterstorm. 1 Lightning Bolt for 3 damage in the face or destroying pesty creatures like Thalia, Guardian of Thraben, Gaddock Teeg and
Meddling Mage
(the two
Barbarian Ring
main board also serve this purpose). NOTE: Chain of Vapor would be more flexible as removal spell, but Lighting Bolt can do direct damage as well and is therefore never a dead card.
SIDEBOARD
Tendrils of Agony
: 1 in the board, so you can effectively run 7 main deck (3x
Tendrils of Agony
+ 4x Burning Wish).
Empty the Warrens: alternative wincon, when you are unable to obtain enough storm count for lethal tendrils.
Past in Flames: combo enhancer: enables more spells for lethal storm count.
Doomsday: combo enhancer: with Burning Wish, a cantrip, 8 mana (or 7 mana with two dead cards to put back with Brainstorm), you can cast 7 spells including
Tendrils of Agony
:
Basic pile (8/7 mana): Manamorphose
Ideas Unbound
/ Brainstorm Dark Ritual Dark Ritual
Tendrils of Agony
Deconstruct
: destroys pesty artifacts (Chalice of the Void, Trinisphere) without losing mana. One to board in and one to be left in the board as a Burning Wish target.
Void Snare: versatile removal; can be boarded in to be included in Doomsday piles, enabling piles with removal for 2 extra mana).
Chain Lightning
: creature removal (up to toughness 3) or 3 damage in the face (effectively lowering the required storm count).
Grapeshot: finishes of opponent at low life total, provides extra direct damage before casting
Tendrils of Agony
; also beats Gaddock Teeg or
Meddling Mage
chanting
Tendrils of Agony
.
Duress: wishable disruption to remove f.i. Mindbreak Trap, Stifle and Flusterstorm.
Cards that did not make the cut:
Shattering Spree: artifact hate, beats counters (or at least your opponent has to counter each replicated copy) and also beats Chalice of the Void on 1 (replicated copies are not cast and do not trigger Chalice of the Void). However,
Deconstruct
is a free alternative that destroys Chalice of the Void on 0, 1 and 2 and also hits Trinisphere for free. Normally you only need to get rid of 1 pesty artifact and most decks running them don't have counterspells.
Paraselene: multiple enchantment removal, f.i. to deal with multilple Leyline of Sanctity's. With 3 mana it is more expensive than f.i. Echoing Truth, but Paraselene is more generally usable against enchantments and can be wished for with Burning Wish. However: against a single Leyline of Sanctity Void Snare works as well and is 2 mana cheaper.
Tomb of Urami
: can be sided in against opposing land destruction (Wasteland) to provide more land. Also provides an alternative wincon (uncounterable and immune to most targeted discard) with the 5/5 flyer in game 2 when your opponent might have sided out his creature removal. However, most opponents keep some removal and
Karakas
is quite common.
Abrupt Decay: versatile, counterproof removal of pesty artifacts, creatures and
Counterbalance
. However, not used because
Deconstruct
is cheaper and can also just be a free spell to add storm (targetting your own Chromatic Star, still getting to draw). Not using Abrupt Decay means that the deck more or less folds to an active
Counterbalance
+ Sensei's Divining Top, but the matchup against countertop is a very bad matchup anyway and we don't want to lose percentages in matchups that we can win.
EDIT: After extensive testing (and following the suggestion of exiledexia), I moved the main board Lightning Bolt to the sideboard in favor of a fourth Ponder. In the sideboard the second
Deconstruct
was cut.
