This is the second installation in my new series "MTG Arena Upgrade Guides". This time, we're focusing on making a Gruul (green-red) Landfall starter deck, and finding budget decks for beginners and long-time Arena players alike. REMINDER FOR BEGINNERS - You must have unlocked ALL of the dual-colored starter decks before upgrading or making decks.

This deck is centered on the mechanic Landfall, which first made its appearance more than a decade ago in "Zendikar". Landfall triggers when a land enters the battlefield. A famous example from that set was Avenger of Zendikar. It's not legal in Standard, but it is a great example of the mechanic. So, we want lots of ramp to get us LOTS of landfall triggers.
There are many great new Landfall cards from Zendikar Rising, but there are several which are great for this deck. 1. Phylath, World Sculptor. Upon entering the battlefield, Phylath makes 0/1 Plants for each basic land we have on the battlefield. So, with cards like Cultivate, we can get lots of basic lands onto the battlefield to prepare for an army of Plants that Phylath can make massive.

  1. Brushfire Elemental. This bad boy is great in Landfall decks, especially more agressive ones like this one. It can hit for one the turn you play it, and the next turn, you can play a land, Cultivate, and have a 5/5 attacker!

  2. Akoum Hellhound. This doggo might not look like much, but when you get consistent land drops, it gets big, and by putting additional lands onto the battlefield, it gets much, much bigger.

  3. Cultivate. This can trigger Landfall like crazy. Paired with our small creatures and Phylath, extra land is amazing to start swinging with your buffed-up Plants.

In this deck, we also have some other great cards for Landfall and aggro.

Ancient Greenwarden. This is amazing in every way. With Evolving Wilds, you can consistently get 2 landfall trggers each turn.

Territorial Scythecat. This is a very efficient card in a landfall deck. With consistent land drops, this can become a big threat for your opponent.

Kazandu Mammoth  . This is an efficient landfall card that is great to craft for all sorts of green decks.

Roiling Regrowth - You will have to sacrifice a land, but you will get two landfall triggers, and possibly on your opponent's turn to have some blockers. Vastwood Surge is an efficient spell, but if you can kick it, your creatures will become even bigger threats.

Garruk's Uprising gives your creatures trample and gets you card advantage that this deck really does not have. The buffed-up plants will become a threat that can't be blocked by small creatures.

FOR BEGINNERS - After you start expanding your collection, find some good cards (like more rare lands) to put in this deck.

FOR EXPERIENCED PLAYERS - This is my version of a sort of starter deck. If you want to up the deck's playability (it already is playable, and quite good) start adding more rares and mythics. Modal Double-Faced cards are great for this deck, like Shatterskull Smashing   and Turntimber Symbiosis  .

FOR ALL - It would be great if you left some feedback in the comments of how you feel the deck is, some cards that might be good that I did not put in, and some of your own upgrades.

Thank you for stopping by to look at the deck. More instalments of this series are coming soon, and maybe brawl and historic decks as well. Thank you, and stay safe!
