I'm looking to build a deck that preys on the mana base in modern to make keeping up with the tempo and disruption of the deck very difficult.
The main forms of LD are Ghost Quarter
+
Shadow of Doubt
, Squelch a fetchland, Shadow of Doubt a fetchland, and in a roundabout way Ghost Quarter
+
Surgical Extraction
a nonbasic land.
I'm looking to play the most efficient removal as possible as well, seeing as how I want to keep the mana cost on my side and my opponents very low. Abrupt Decay and Dismember feel like the most efficient options.
In terms of disruption, I like to be proactive with Inquisition of Kozilek and Thoughtseize, prioritizing Thoughtseize because we don't want to let our opponents play a lot of spells higher than cmc 3 anyways. More reactively, Remand, Mana Leak, and
Spell Snare
all feel like very efficient ways to delay or counter our opponent's plays. Disrupting Shoal is our own little Force of Will for modern, and is often unexpected.
For our beats,I of course wanted the efficiency of Tarmogoyf and Delver of Secrets
. dark confident feels like a great way to keep up pressure while grinding out card advantage, and a one of for
Vendillion Clique
feels like a flexible card for a lot of situations.
Choices I made to not add to the deck include:
Serum Visions - While the Scry is handy, I feel like the deck already has enough cantripping and card draw that I would rather have spells that have action rather than durdle.
Gitaxian Probe - Again, already have enough cantrips, and I've got plenty of ways to view the opponents hand already.
Tasigur, the Golden Fang - I didn't like the way he non-bos with Tarmogoyf, and I don't think this deck will be casting spells fast enough to pay for him so cheaply, plus with all the Bobs in the deck I feel like this is a risk I'm not crazy about taking.
Now this deck is definitely still in it's infancy, and I'd love to hear all questions, comments, suggestions, testing results, hate mail, marriage proposals, and haikus you have about this list. I'm not married to the majority of this list, but I do know that I want a Delver list that plays very small and packs a lot of disruption.
