A modern land destruction deck meant to close the game with
Trinisphere
.
Here is the breakdown:
MANA DENIAL
Boom/Bust
combos with fetch lands and Ghost Quarter on turn 3 as well as
flagstone of trokair
turn 2. Best LD in the format!
Stone Rain just some additional LD here, Molten Rain is better, but with 4 Ghost Quarter and 4
flagstone of trokair
, it is probably best to avoid
Ajani Vengeant can tap down anything to keep my opponent off whatever is necessary. Also doubles as removal and can make a path for Geist of Saint Traft
Mangara of Corondor can exile anything! plus it combos with Restoration Angel
Aven Mindcensor for some anti fetch land action and to work well with Ghost Quarter. I like this over Leonin Arbiter because it has flash and flying, making it significantly more useful.
Ghostly Prison beats twin game one and disables creatures from attacking when they don't have mana
Trinisphere
is the best card in the deck and the main reason we run Simian Spirit Guide. If we are on the play and can drop this on turn 2, it is truly devastating and they may never come back. It can just mean my opponent never casts any spell.
THREATS
Geist of Saint Traft is why we play blue. The fact that it has hexproof means when we lock down the game, removal becomes a dead card! Watch out for Liliana of the Veil though.
Restoration Angel is a great resilient threat that dodges most removal in the format. It also can protect our creatures.
Batterskull is amazing. We win the race if we have it.
REMOVAL
Wrath of God just to slow down the opponent if they have a board presence
Lightning Bolt is the best card in the format. Auto include 4 of. If you can make an argument as why not to, I'm all ears. As it is pretty bad with
Trinisphere
, but getting rid of opponent's turn one play is very good here.
ACCELERATION
Simian Spirit Guide is awesome. Originally I was going to go 4 colors for Noble Hierach and Birds of Paradise opening up some side tech as well as potentially Beast Within or
Plow Under
, but the explosive and surprise factor of this guy will win us games. Also, as we do lock down, playing it as a 2/2 isn't the worst in the world. Especially if you play the more equipment heavy version. If you don't like this guy, remove him and put in Narset Transcendent and
Wildfire
and go up one land and then tune a bit more. Seems like another interesting way to go.
Crucible of Worlds can give us a much stronger long game. Plus if we get this with Ghost Quarter the game is pretty much over.
SIDEBOARD
Anger of the Gods for aggro and collected company combo
Shatterstorm is some auto include affinity hate
Chalice of the Void as some quick ways to deal with lots of decks. Simian Spirit Guide lets us put this down with 1 counter on turn 1 on the play, which is very strong.
Flashfreeze
to get some quick turn 2 denial.
Izzet Staticaster to deal with pesky tokens and mana dorks
Boil may hit our lands, but only two of them. This destroys control decks that land destruction isn't that great on since they play 25-27 lands.
To conclude, this deck is fun for you and frustrating for your opponent. The only problem I can see is not answering an early Tarmogoyf or Tasigur. Would love opinions and help! +1 if you like!
