Sideboard

Over the past year, we've seen a lot of cards downshifted or added to the format which encourage a spell-slinging style of deck in RW: Seeker of the Way and Emerge Unscathed in IMA, Ghitu Lavarunner in Dominaria, and most recently Maximize Velocity in GRN. I got to wondering whether all the support was enough to build a deck with legs. This list is sort of a proof of concept.

The obvious (and justified) question is - why play this over Izzet Blitz? To which I have a couple tentative answers.

  • Emerge Unscathed and Gods Willing are more flexible than their blue equivalents, offering both evasion and protection in one card, while Dispel and Daze can only be used reactively.
  • The lifegain from Seeker of the Way has the potential to be really significant against other aggressive decks.
  • Seeker also enables the deck to play a bit more patiently if need be, since his high toughness and the potential for tricks means he can attack into a lot of boards without having to completely go off.
  • In the sideboard, Sacred Cat and Cenn's Enlistment are good threats against decks which are relying on Edicts or other 1-for-1 removal to beat you, and Standard Bearer is a flexible option that can both protect you from removal and hate out other combo decks.
  • Faithless Looting and Maximize Velocity give the deck a good way to turn lands into real cards later in the game, reducing the risk of flooding.
