Commander / EDH Mono-Green

Mono Green voltron with Syr Faren, the Henghammer!

Pretty straightforward. but I will point out some interesting things with the deck:

  • Cultivator of Blades and Wild Beastmaster may just seem like redundancy in the deck, which they are. But when we have one of these plus our commander out, we can stack the triggers so that Syr Faren gives the cultivator the +10/+10, and then the cultivator gives the rest of our board +11/+11, including the tokens it generates and our commander

  • The deck wants to curve out like follows: t1 - dork ; t2 - commander boi ; t3 - equipment or aura on commander boi. While this is the most optimal curve, you may notice that the deck does not run enough 1 drop dorks and three cost auras/equipments to get this every turn. This is intentional, because of how this deck wants to play. It is an aggro deck at its core, and if you do end up with the optimal curve, you will likely be swinging for 10+ damage on turn 3, pretty quickly becoming the focus of the board. This is very not optimal for the deck, as it only has so much protection and recursion. So I gave the deck some more powerful, but slower options instead

  • The deck runs a lot of artifact/enchantment and graveyard hate, as it is what green does best with little creature removal options available

  • There is a surprisingly low amount of ramp for a green deck. With such a low curve and cheap general, 7 ramp sources are really the only things that I need, and most of that is dorks that can be used to help Syr Faren in a pinch. I am not proxying right now with this deck, but if I were to, I would swap out the Utopia Sprawl and Wild Growth out for a Birds of Paradise and a Delighted Halfling

  • Reliquary Tower may seem odd in this deck, but it is actually pretty nice in the deck: it taps for colourless - not a problem bieng a mono-coloured deck - can also activate Warping Wail ; but most importantly, majority of the card draw in this deck is power based - which will end up bieng upwards of ten most of the time I need to refill my cards - it is not really a problem having to discard down to seven, as a Hunter's Insight still is a 'draw the seven best cards of the top ten of your deck' for three, but bieng able to keep all ten cards every other game is nice

  • Through watching a bunch of videos online, I found a handful of underused and amazing cards, like: Night Soil - note with this: the 'exile two creature cards in a graveyard' is a part of the activation cost, so the ability does not use the stack, and countering the ability does not stop the exiling ; Monstrous Onslaught is a great mono green board-wipe for almost any expensive commander, or any green voltron strategy - though it is a bit clunky in this list as you can't activate it before your dorks get Syr Faren's buff ; Warping Wail is going to be a great surprise for any opponent - I just have to draw one of my ten colourless sources! ; Timeless Witness is a card that exists ; Uncage the Menagerie is surprisingly only in 4500 decks that can run it - it is a fantastic tutor in green, considering green has a huge amount of utility creatures - an example would be: cast for 5, grab a Reclaimation Sage, Eternal Witness and a Forest Elves for just so much versatility ; and while it isn't in the deck right now, Bequeathal is a great green card draw option for commander.

That was a lot more text than intended, sorry :>

But one last thing that I want to point out is how, underrated Syr Faren, the Hengehammer may be as a voltron commander. He is cheap to cast, flies under the radar a lot of the time being just an average uncommon (who has been very much powercrept since printing) from a notoriously powerful set. As well, the way that you have to design your deck around him actually circumvents a lot of voltron's weakness' - as well as those of aggro as a whole - in commander. The biggest issue is the hextupling of lifetotals, comparative to 60-card formats. Syr Faren gets around this by giving his buffs to another evasive creature - allowing the aggro player to focus on multiple opponents at once, one with commander damage, and another with a massive evasive one drop that the table will be hesitant to remove due to it only being a big body. Additionally, having these cheap fodder creatures in the deck allows for chump blocking after a huge swing - while not being that impressive, a couple 1/1 blockers can often mean that you out-damage the table. These random 1/1s put in the deck also means that the deck is not as weak to edict (Sheoldred's Edict) effects as a usual voltron deck is - and whatever spot removal / boardwipe weakness' the deck has are smoothed over with 9 protection spells, and 6 ways to recur things.
