Another great showing for the deck at FNM. Quick summary of the matches below.
The one game loss was to double Goyf, and I pulled no answers.
- Match 2 - Jesaki Control - Win 2-1
Good opponent, I just got the soft lock in the 3rd match a turn before he could win. Side note I had a Pithing Needle down naming Jace, Vryn's Prodigy
Flip, it should have been the flip of Jace, Telepath Unbound
Flip which allowed him to win the game he took.
- Match 3 - Grixis Something - Win 2-0
Unfortunately he had to mulligan down to 4 the first game, and when I led with a Thoughtseize, he coincided so I would not see what he was playing. Game 2 I just got ahead and was rapidly doing damage with the Rack and protecting myself with the Bridge. He was able to Hurkyl's Recall and get some damage in, but I had sufficient lands to play everything back next turn and win on his next upkeep.
- Match 4 - Bant Eldrazi - Loss 1-2
Game 1 went pretty quick with me getting under a bridge, and waiting until a soft lock was established with 2 Necrogen Mists, and a Rack/Shrieking Affliction.
Game 2 was the most fun game I had with the deck. I did not see any creature removal, or a bridge, so I was rapidly losing life due to his 5/5 Trampler. However, I had both a Rack and Shrieking Affliction down and he was eating 5 or 6 a turn also. I was down to 3 life and need to top deck any removal or a bridge. or I was dead the next turn. Top deck was a Smallpox, which was amazing, as it would have killed his one creature, dropped him within range to die from the Rack/Shrieking Affliction from the one life loss within 2 turns, and made him short on lands to follow-up with the creature he was holding. The problem is that he was holding one card I did not know what it was. When I saw the Smallpox, I almost windmill slammed it, but his immediate response was a resounding "NO!" as he thrust forward a Stubborn Denial! Even though that handed me the game loss, it was pretty awesome!
Game 3 he got the jump on me and wiped me up pretty quick. He ended up winning the tourney so that helped my final breakers.
- Match 5 - Fattie Beatdown - Win 2-0
Because I was at 9 points but not top seeded of the remaining 9 pointers, I had to play it out instead of ID into Top 8.
I know he was playing some high end payoff cards and a few green fatties. The premise would be to ramp into them and smash face. I really didn't see anything except one guy which quickly became a Victim of the Night... The deck must have done some great things to get him to 3-1, but did not develop at all against me. Easy wins putting me at 4-1.
So after 5 rounds, we did a cut to the Top 8. Again 32 players with 6 players dropping. Because the two 4-0 players ID into the 1st and 2nd spots (like I did last week), this earned me 3rd place.
With Fatal Push coming out this next week, I am at odds of how to incorporate this in the 75. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated and welcome!
