Sideboard


Many Magic the Gathering players have been porting over powerful Standard decks and bolstering them with older cards as they transition into the Pioneer format.

In this build we turn that concept on its head and attempt to port a popular Modern deck into Pioneer and see where it takes us.

Today we Are looking at a Pioneer Dredgeless Dredge Brew.

Because we are looking at the Pioneer format, we don't have access to the Dredge mechanic. Dredge, simply put, replaces any card we draw with the ability to self mill as a replacement effet.

The biggest problem for our build is we can't avoid the game action of drawing each turn which means we run the risk of drawing the powerful spells we would rather mill such as Creeping Chill.

The work around we'll employ is to cast spells that give us more options. We are going to explore spells such as Otherworldly Gaze. This spell will allow us to mill our libraries while controlling what cards stay on top so we can guarantee cards we'd rather not mill such as Tome Scour. Hitting land drops is critical because with the format being slower, mana is going to be far more important than the modern equivalent.

(These cards are going to sit in the "dredge" and "cantrip" slots that dredge lists commonly have.)

Creeping Chill is the source of life gain we need to trigger Silversmote Ghoul. Likewise Silversmote Ghoul can trigger Prized Amalgam.

Silversmote Ghoul only resolves on your end step whereas Prized Amalgam resolves at the beginning of the following end step. Instant speed plays on the opponents turn such as Otherworldly Gaze will want to be used at the end of the second main phase V.S. during the other players end step. The trigger won't resolve until your turn; however, that can buy you time to hit an amalgam.

Without the traditional cantrip effects that provides and the lack of Conflagrate in the format, was regulated to a splash color.

Driven / Despair fills the role of powerful finisher. This synergizes with cards like Minister of Inquiries which acts as a body that can attack late game when you want to rip the remaining cards from your opponents hand.

Minister of Inquiries can also be used at instant speed in the hopes to hit a Narcomoeba as a flash blocker, or to trigger a Prized Amalgam before it would un-tap on your turn. This interaction is the same as its modern equivalent with Shriekhorn; however, unlike shriekhorn, since the minister uses energy as its fuel instead of charge counters, we can "re-fill" using our Aether Hub. we also have the option to use extra energy as color fixing in the early game if needed.

In this brew, Silversmote Ghoul functions similarly to Bloodghast in the modern version of the deck. While not as easy to abuse as its Modern counterpart, it is comparable. Both cards are able to see a single instance of their respective triggers and have all respond to the same trigger in order to swarm the field, but the Goul has more power and is able to block.

Cling to Dust is another option to trigger our Ghouls while being able to deal with reoccurring threats such as Arclight Phoenix.

Stitcher's Supplier is hard value to pass up because it equates to 6 cards milled for a single investment and blocks an attack to boot!

This Build has been a lot of fun to play around with and in a post Inverter / Breech world, this has proved to be very fierce at least in play testing. I will continue to work on and develop this build so comments/critiques/opinions are welcome.

Updates Add

Made some big changes fo the list to accommodate the increased speed of the format. Cut Apex of forever for Ox to give the ability to discard unwanted cards stuck in hand. Trying Tome scour and breaking / Entering again.

Cut most green and updated Mana base to splash red.

Also made some sideboard changes that I'll be testing over fhe next few weeks
