I have always loved tribal decks, and I think that I've finally found my favorite one. Esper Spirits is very efficient, quick, and robust. It is rogue in that you don't see any top 8 lists with versions of it, which makes your opponents sideboards more likely to miss.
Preferably, turn one sees a fetch land, a shock land, and a
thoughtsieze
. This already puts you at 15 life, so it is a disadvantage in that aspect, but taking an essential piece out of your opponent's game matters more than that. Against burn, obviously, you would side out your
thoughtsieze
s because all the cards in that deck are essentially just different versions of Lightning Bolt variants, and putting yourself at 14 life on your first turn will just make them win a turn sooner.
Turn two is the problem with this deck. Either you play an
Honor of the Pure
or an Intangible Virtue, or you just pass the turn without those, hoping to Remand their threat, or Path to Exile their creature. This significant loss of tempo is made up for when, on the third turn you can play a three-drop spirit maker, Geist of Saint Traft, or a Drogskol Captain. When your second turn play was one of the two enchantments, it feels so good to Spectral Procession to get three 2/2 flyers, that sometimes have vigilance.
The rest of the game is fairly intuitive, as were the first three turns. I really enjoy this deck, and hope that everyone else does too. Good luck.
