As a faithful mono-Red player, I find it hard to branch away from the comfort zone of my Searing Bloods, Lightning Strike, Stoke the Flames, etc.So I decided to brew up a Jund Dragons idea, because Jund.
Card Decisions
Den Protector - Let's face it, Dragons die. Why let Abzan have all the fun? A 3 of to ensure that I have the ability to call back a Thunderbreak Regent or Dragonlord Atarka (among others) is welcomed in this deck.
Dragonlord Atarka - I chose to run 3 keep my chances high to always have one. This deck runs quite a few "reveal Dragon, get bonus" cards and I want to have one in hand to get value out of my Draconic Roar and Foul-tongue Invocation. Of course, an 8/8 Flying/Trample Dragon that can shoot down a planeswalker upon EtB is pretty sweet.
Hangarback Walker - Once again, why let Abzan have all the fun? Hangarback Walker seems like the card to add, because, Hangarback, but this card will serve its purpose. If not for a fun Turn 2 play, but as a late game threat as well.
EDIT
Now in the Maybeboard.
Kolaghan, the Storm's Fury - This card I'm a little on the fence about. It's Dash mechanic is sure to be used and if there are multiple Dragons on the board, this guy only beefs them up!
Nissa, Vastwood Seer - Nissa gets you that 4th land in your hand if mana gives you trouble and her planeswalker version just keeps adding cards to your hand/getting lands out onto the battlefield. Helps get out the 5+ drops.
Tasigur, the Golden Fang - A single copy to the deck to catch the opponent off guard. With Den Protector and Kolaghan's Command in the deck, I don't want to delve too much in case I need to bring back a dragon. Plus Tasigur's ability helps get a power card back into your hand when the game drags on.
Thunderbreak Regent - We've lost Stormbreath Dragon, but we still have Thunderbreak. An instant 4 of in this deck.
Draconic Roar, Foul-tongue Invocation, Murderous Cut - At a 4-of, 2-of, and 1-of respectively, we have some Instants to keep the board clean for your Dragons to take over. A little less than half the creatures in the deck are Dragons, so getting the added bonus from Draconic Roar and Foul-tongue Invocation is pretty consistent. A single copy of Murderous Cut to keep the one mana kill spell open, but still keeps the deck delve light.
Kolaghan's Command - Mostly going to be used to bring back a Dragon or another creature to your hand, but it's other modes will find a use. Just a good utility card for the deck.
Roast - As a mono-Red player, I'm used to running these bad boys in the sideboard. But seeing as Abzan and the big, bad Rhino doesn't seem to be going anywhere, a 2 of feels right. We don't have a good 2 mana burn spell post rotation for this deck, but if it can't hit a Rhino, it'll take down a bulky threat standing in your way.
Ruinous Path - The New Downfall. We lose Instant speed, but we gain an Awaken ability that could prove to be useful in the late game. Chose to run these over Ultimate Price in anticipation of colorless Eldrazzi in the meta. A 3 of, plus one in the SB, for easy creature/planeswalker removal.
Sarkhan, the Dragonspeaker - Removal has slowed down a bit, so it's gonna be a good time to bring Sarkhan out from hiding. He's the closest we will get to a Stormbreath, can chances are high that you will at least get to get a 4 damage swing/creature damage out of him. Just more fuel to the Dragon fire. Didn't want to go too heavy on him, so I'm running 2.
Ob Nixilis Reignited - This guy, I'm excited for. It's +1 ability is too good. I'll pay a life to draw a card all day. If need be, it's a five mana Murder. Regardless on how long it remains on the board, it will continue to generate value one way or another.
The Landbase
4x Bloodstained Mire
3x Cinder Glade
3x Forest
2x Haven of the Spirit Dragon
2x Mountain
3x Smoldering Marsh
4x Swamp
4x Wooded Foothills
SIDEBOARD
Crux of Fate x2 - Our 5 mana board wipe spell when single kill spells aren't cutting it.
Duress x2 - We don't have Thoughtseize, but we have the next best thing.
Feed the Clan x2 - For use against your typical Burn strats.
Foul-tongue Invocation x2 - For when you know they don't pack Hangarback Walker.
Radiant Flames x3 - Tokens aren't going anywhere. Side these bad boys in to keep your opponent's board clean.
Ruinous Path x1 - Torn between keeping this in the side, or replacing it with a Kolaghan's Command. Just adds more removal.
Transgress the Mind x3 - Once again, why let Abzan have all the fun? Essential for getting that Siege Rhino out of their hand and into exile. Hits many targets, not just Siege Rhino. (The salt is real.)
Anyways, I think this could be a strong deck decision for those that have tried the RG and RB Dragons formula and want to try something new! Let me know what you guys think!
