Standard deck for Khans of Tarkir block.
Played a 2HG Pre-release on 9/22/2014. Went 1-2.
Lost to flyers on the first round. Second game had too much removal, a big dude of theirs we couldnt take down, and not getting good pulls.
Working around the +1/+1 counters. Trying to incorporate as many quality spells as possible to help each creature benefit from the "sliver-like" abilities they share amongst those with counters. Outlast helps put counters on the board, but it is slower than I prefer. Hardened Scales helps with this.
CREATURES:
Anafenza, the Foremost - only one of for this legendary creature that fits the theme of the deck: a strong body for 3cmc that contains all the colors. Can swing by turn 3 (with ramp) and dumps counters on fellow attacking creatures.
Abzan Falconer - Flyers are a big weakness for this tribe, but Abzan Falconer levels it out, and with enough creatures and counters, can possibly dominate the skies. A set is an absolute must. Four please!
Ainok Bond-Kin - a cheap creature with affordable outlast that grants first strike to all creatures with counters. 2x copies, as its helpful, but not necessary for a playset.
Fleecemane Lion - solid 2 drop that can swing for 3 on turn 3. Add monstrosity that puts a counter on him, plus makes him hexproof and indestructible?? He definitely won't be sitting on the bench. I only have 2 for now, but once I capture more, they will definitely find a home here.
High Sentinels of Arashin - Flyer? Check. Able to make counters? Double check. Is pumped up by other creatures with counters? Triple check. These guys also have the body to withstand most burn spells. Only two for now, but may want to add one more as he is a significant creature for this deck. *Edit: secured a third copy. Put it in the main board.
Polukranos, World Eater - Massive body for 4 cmc that can hit the board on turn 3 and swing by turn 4. His monstrosity ability will remove pesky creatures, in addition to dropping more counters, which will hopefully be triggered by hardened scales.
Siege Rhino - a B.D.D. with 3 life gain that also pings an opponent directly for 3? I'll take a play-set please! Managed to nab 3 at the pre-release.
Sylvan Caryatid - helps ramp up, fixes mana, and has decent protection with hexproof. Working on getting a playset, but Voyaging Satyr will do for now as a substitute.
Warden of the First Tree - A "wardenful" one drop on turn one with great mid to late game value. If not dealt with, he becomes a threat in the late game that helps stabilize with life gain, and is able to get his damage through with trample. One copy for now as I'm seeing how he works in the deck (put in a LOT of work during the pre-release for FRF).
TECH:
Abzan Ascendancy - great enchantment for giving all creatures on the battlefield the needed counter, plus a side benefit of having a flyer left behind should any be slagged.
Bow of Nylea - the Swiss Army Knife for Green. This beauty has 4 tools that are all useful. Primarily, the counter ability.
Citadel Siege - versatile enchantment that is putting out counters every turn at no cost, or tapping a creature. Most of the time, Khans mode will be chosen.
Hardened Scales - the amplifier for this deck. Once it drops, things will get bonkers with the +1/+1 counters. May need one more.
REMOVAL:
Abzan Charm - one option is to destroy target creature with toughness 3 or greater.
Dromoka's Command - An inexpensive, instant speed, and versatile tool for doing the things this deck needs: place a counter, removal, and protection. My only 2 copies are going in.
Valorous Stance - versatile. Allows protection of a creature or removal of a BDD. Swapped it with Hero's Downfall, b/c it was one mana cheaper.
SIDEBOARD:
Hero's Downfall - Moved it from the main board to the side board, as I rarely was using it. Will swap in for decks with a lot of pesky planeswalkers.
GAME NOTES:
- Deck usually stabilizes by turn 5.
- When Siege Rhino drops (hopefully by turn 3) or I have bigger creatures, usually will be fine unless a board wipe.
- I rarely have time or mana available to activate a creature's Outlast ability. It seems to be useful if things are stalling and I have enough creatures and time. Usually, a few creatures will have counters, then I drop an Abzan Falconer to give them all flying and swing for lethal.
