The Beauty of Bant

This is my take on Bant Company, a deck that seems to be doing quite well in the standard meta at the moment. Bant is a three color combination consisting of . It plays like a control deck that's based around creatures, which is pretty unique. I pretty much only play control, so I thought I'd play around with this deck, since I have the cards. If you have any questions or suggestions, please leave them here!

- 4 Duskwatch Recruiter  's. Just a good value card, I don't really care what side he's on.

- 4 Sylvan Advocate's. A 2/3 for with vigilance is good. A 4/5 for the same cost is GREAT.

- 4 Bounding Krasis'. This creature is just so versitle. You can flash him in to prevent a dude from attacking you; you can flash him in to un-tap one of your guys and double block a big threat. Just a lot of use we'll get out of him, 4-of is a must.

- 4 Reflector Mage's. He's a great tempo play as he basically set's your opponent behind a turn, especially in the early game.

- Some amount of Archangel Avacyn  . The exact amount is debateable; some will run 2, others 3, a few may run 4. She's just a bomb to drop in the late game, in my opinion. I run 2 because I wanted to run 4 Jace, Vryn's Prodigy  . I'm a Jace fanboy <3

- 4 Collected Company. Hard to have a Company deck without this card.

1. Clip Wings - Useful against Mindwrack Demon , Archangel Avacyn  , and anyone that want's to run dragons.

2. Declaration in Stone - Really wish this was instant speed, even if it would've cost more. However, since it exiles, it can still deal with Ormendahl, Profane Prince   (after he's already hit you once...). It also helps deal with pesky tokens either from Secure the Wastes or Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet.

3. A second Den Protector - She can be an elusive minion against decks that have some good blockers available. She's a good flex card, in the sense that she can be replaced with something else.

4. A second Hidden Dragonslayer - Great against decks that can drop huge bombs (coughcough Ramp cough).

5. Invocation of Saint Traft - I won't lie... I just think this card is sweet. Put it on an elusive dude like Den Protector or Archangel Avacyn  , or put it on a Sylvan Advocate after she get's big. It'll out tempo most creature based desks.

6. Lantern Scout - Pretty much you bring this in against RDW or other super aggresive decks.

7. Negate - I'll pretty much bring it in against any other blue deck. It also is a great way to stop someone from trying to get in a sneaky Secure the Wastes. The reason I go with this over Dispel is simply because it can be used in way more situations at the cost of only extra.

8. A second Ojutai's Command - Very good and flexable card. Usually I'm casting this to get back a Sylvan Advocate or a Jace, Vryn's Prodigy   and drawing a card. The extra two modes just give it more viability.

9. A second Tireless Tracker - Great in deck's that try and drag you into the late game, ie. control matchup's. They won't really want to use removal on him early, but he can get you clues which will help you get through your deck a lot faster. Also, if they leave him alone for any length of time, he can get pretty scary in the late game.

Round 1: vs. UR Goggles Control

Round 2: vs. Bant Company

  • Game 1 -- WIN - I get a T2 Duskwatch Recruiter   which flipped for my T3 and I landed a Tireless Tracker and a Sylvan Advocate. I pass and he reflectors one of them, but I T4 land pass and CoCo at the end of his turn, bounce his dudes, and have plenty of my own. He scoops so we can get to game 2.
  • IN:2x Invocation of Saint Traft ; 3x Negate - OUT:1x Archangel Avacyn  ; 2x Jace, Vryn's Prodigy  ; 1x Nissa, Vastwood Seer  ; 1x Hidden Dragonslayer
  • Game 2 -- WIN - I get another T2 Duskwatch Recruiter   which flipped for my T3 (again). This time, however, I put an Invocation of Saint Traft on him. The look on the kid's face was priceless haha. He had no idea why I was running that in my sideboard and he didn't have an immidiate answer for it. Swinging in with 7 damage on T3 is pretty nice. Hard to come back from too, it seems. I out tempo him for a few more turns before I beat him.
  • The mirror is a tricky beast, however I feel like the kid didn't keep the best hands. I noticed he didn't have the right colors for certain tempo drops, which would allow me to go all in. Knowing what's in your opponents deck makes things easier :p

Round 3: vs. Esper Control

  • Game 1 -- WIN - So, languish hurts us... A LOT. I managed to get some lucky draws and keep tempo pretty well. I Coco'd in response to her attacking with Dragonlord Ojutai and landed a Reflector Mage and a Sylvan Advocate, which bounced her dude and set me up for lethal next turn. Again, I just kept landing threats until she ran out of gas, then I went all in.
  • IN:2x Clip Wings ; 1x Den Protector; 1x Hidden Dragonslayer ; 1x Ojutai's Command - OUT:2x Archangel Avacyn  ; 2x Reflector Mage; 1x Bounding Krasis
  • Game 2 -- WIN - She keeps me under control for a good duration of the game. I counter her first Dragonlord Ojutai with an ojutia's command (ironic...), and brought back a Sylvan Advocate with it. Her second dude I clip wings when she thinks it's safe to attack and declares him as an attacker. After that I land a nasty CoCo (not sure what landed exactly) and set up for lethal.
  • This was actually my scariest round of the night. Languish REALLY hurts us, so we have to be careful not to overextend. Just take your time in games against control players. Make good value plays and you should be fine.

Round 4: vs. BW enchantments (???)

  • Game 1 -- WIN - I wasn't sure what this guy was trying to do for pretty much all of this game. I'm not sure if this deck is well known or what have you, but I had no idea what it was. He just used Stasis Snare and Silk Wrap to lock down a couple of my dudes, but I eventually flood the board and beat him.
  • IN:2x Invocation of Saint Traft - OUT:2x Archangel Avacyn
  • Game 2 -- LOSS - By T3 I have the good ol' Krallenhorde Howler   and Invocation of Saint Traft mini-combo out. He end's up using his T4 to play a Demonic Pact . I wasn't sure what to think but I think I kind of laughed out loud. I manage to swing in for another 7 on my turn and leave up CoCo mana. He uses one of the modes of the enchantment to kill my dude. He leaves up mana but I'm not scared, so I EoT CoCo. WHIFF. Just a Tireless Tracker. Anywho, the game continues and I'm not hitting any creatures. But it comes to the time when he has to use his last mode of Demonic Pact and I'm thinking I'm about to win. Nope. He bounces it back to his hand and the game continues. He lands some planeswalker that gives him card advantage and I hit lands for 4-5 turns in a row. He ends up beating me somehow, I don't remember how, I wasn't in the best mood at this time. My first loss of the night and it's to some janky crap.
  • IN:3x Negate - OUT:1x Den Protector; 1x Hidden Dragonslayer ; 1x Jace, Vryn's Prodigy
  • Game 3 -- WIN - Re-read game 2, but I negate him trying to bounce Demonic Pact back to his hand and make him kill himself. Screw this guy...
  • If I would have known what was going on, I may have played differently and done better in game 2. I didn't like this kid though, he was annoying me with his poor manners and janky deck. Yeah I felt the salt...

Overall I feel like I did pretty well. Some of my SBing decisions were questionable, but I feel like Invocation of Saint Traft was the MVP of the sideboard. It caught a lot of people off guard and 7 damage on T3 is pretty sweet. 4x Jace, Vryn's Prodigy   definitely feels like overkill, but <3 Jace. I was very comfortable with the land base as well, I only got flooded once I think, and that'll happen from time to time. Anywho, I hope you enjoyed this report.

Until next time, Thund3r_C0ugar out!
