Sideboard

Maybeboard

NOTE Sidedeck = Considering adding vs. Maybeboard = Keeping on backburner.

Most of these notes are from me for me, and do not represent professional level (see also: good) commentary / advice.

Remember when we thought this deck was just a meme? BRUH ITS SO FUN AND IT CAN HOLD UP 1V1 (mind you, draw and match-up dependant). I can't wait to try it in a larger multiplayer setting.

This deck is a, as the kids say, "Frogs Matter" deck. This is a true, yet deceptive, description. Grolnok, the Omnivore represents a massive card-advantage engine. If we can reliably play Grolnok, protect Grolnok and swing with frogs then we get a whopping 3card/Frog card advantage engine. Permenants milled off of Grolnok can be re-cast so long as Grolnok is in play, non permanents get milled.

There are two main ways to take advantage of this: First, go permanent heavy. Auras, enchantments, artifacts, creatures. This becomes stronger when said cards have Flash. If you can replace an instant or sorcery with a permanent, it will become far more versatile a deck. (For example, replace Unsummon with Aether Spellbomb). Secondly, try to include non-permanents that can self recur via Flashback (see Visions of Dominance) or Jumpstart or what-have-you. Powerful non-recurring non-permanents are okay as running Eternal Witness and Timeless Witness means that what few non-self-recurring cards you have can still be reclaimed and re-used.

Green is renowned for Cultivate, Rampant Growth and other land-fetches. I find that Grolnok lets you hit enough lands, combined with Azusa, Lost but Seeking and our mana-rocks allow us to avoid that type of ramp, since hitting the instant/sorcery land-ramps with Grolnok is mostly wasted card value. If desperate, find creature replacements like Sylvan Ranger or Solemn Simulacrum.

A huge tip when playing this deck: Always try to play your land-per-turn from Exile, not from hand. You will always have access to your hand, but you may lose Grolnok and lose access to those lands anyways. Additionally, doing this gives you some fodder for discard effects that let you choose the discard, or can intimidate other players into thinking you have in-hand options.

Self-Mill is viable with Grolnok, the Omnivore as it effects cards that mill from your deck, not cards that are milled via Grolnok's triggered ability. Combine this with Laboratory Maniac for an additional win-con. Cards like Increasing Confusion, Drown in Dreams and etc. can be useful to either mill out an opponent or finish the job on yourself, or provide a burst of card-advantage through Grolnok.

COMBOS or TRICKS

Murkfiend Liege + Opposition = Stall. Also good for untapping frogs triggering Grolnok.

Doc Aurlock, Grizzled Genius + Grolnok, the Omnivore = The Bear makes everything MUCH cheaper from the exile zone. Very viable.

Perplexing Chimera and Illusory Gains will absolutely shake the battlefield. If possible, multiply with Copy Enchantment or Endless Evil to stall the game to your frog-like whims.

Imprisoned in the Moon, Song of the Dryads and One with the Stars are Commander-hate. These represent a difficult position for your opponent. Eaten by Piranhas and Frogify are thematic and cool, but opponents can block with them or sacrifice them as a creature, etc. Relatively easy to bring back. The former three likely mean they either find/use enchantment removal (which protects your things like Illusory Gains or Asceticism) or lose their commander for a large portion of the game. Out of these, Imprisoned in the Moon is best as it removes the commander's abilities, whereas the others do not.
