Marchesa WIP

Updates Add

Big changes today! I decided that I wanted to achieve a few goals with these changes:

  1. Remove artifacts in favour of creatures. Generally, I want as many creatures as possible to synergise with Marchesa as much as I can.
  2. Remove token producers. Token producers synergise well with sacrifice outlets like Phyrexian Altar, but in general I care more about sacrificing creatures that will come back with Marchesa's ability.
  3. Free up some cards for my Extus token/storm deck.

Luckily, these goals align quite a bit! I've made a few direct swaps, and then a few more bulk changes where the new cards don't really serve the same purpose as the old ones.

Swaps
Lightning Greaves out, Goro-Goro, Disciple of Ryuseifoil in. Lightning greaves is great and powerful, but (in my opinion) boring and overplayed. I don't really need the shroud protection too much because Marchesa makes my team come back a lot, and Goro-Goro provides the haste side of things pretty well. He even allows me to haste more than one creature per combat which is great! I don't think the token production ability will be relevant too often, but I was keen to find a card that did a lot of what greaves does while still being a creature.

Embercleave out, Lizard Bladesfoil in. I'm quite sure this is a downgrade but I just like the idea of Lizard Blades in the deck a lot more than Embercleave. As a creature Marchesa can resurrect it, and it fits in with my idea of running more niche cards that are good in specific decks rather than cards that are generally good across a lot of decks. We'll see how this one plays out!

Gadrak, the Crown-Scourge out, Kalain, Reclusive Painter in. Being honest I haven't had the chance to play Gadrak at all since I put him in. While he's a creature, if he can't attack it's tough to get counters on him, which makes him basically an enchantment. I tend to have my creatures die on opponent's turns a lot more than on mine as well. Kalain is a good role player in the deck - he works to ramp early, enable counters, and as he re-enters the battlefield he generates more value.

The next changes are less direct swaps and more combinations of cards I wanted to take out and those I want to put in. I've still roughly matched them up in groups here to get a good idea of how different functions and CMCs in the deck have changed though!

Phyrexian Altar, Ashnod's Altar, Skullclamp out.
With my reduction in token production, these cards get a lot less useful, and I also really want them for my Extus deck. The only one I've ever noticed put work in in the deck is Skullclamp, but with a lot less X/1s I think this one will fit into Extus a lot better. To replace them:
Bold Plagiarist - a card I've always wanted to try in the deck but never found room for. Also, there are two Kathril players in my semi-regular pod, and I can't wait to blow them out with this, then get all the tokens onto The Ozolith.
Hidetsugu, Devouring Chaosfoil - Removing the altars leaves me with fewer sacrifice outlets, and I'm keen to see how Hidetsugu performs. The card advantage may or may not be worthwhile, so I'll keep my eye on him.
Arcane Signetfoil - Okay so I couldn't think of something to make up for the reduction in mana production here, so I've put in Arcane Signet in the meantime. I'd like to find replacements for my various rocks soon, but I don't have them on hand yet :P

Sword of Fire and Ice out, Hidetsugu Consumes All  Flip in. Sword is again a great generic card, but I always found myself wanting to spend mana on anything else. As mentioned above, protection isn't too necessary in the deck, and while the ping and draw can be useful, they're not really exciting or on theme. Hidetsugu Consumes All is just a very interesting card to me. It adds some useful utility like wiping out tokens and Sol Rings, which I like. You might think that exiling graveyards works against me, but strangely I won't really ever have creatures in my graveyard that Marchesa is going to bring back at the time that it triggers. It might be a non-bo with stuff like Reanimate, but I think that's not too bad. The real reason to play this card is Vessel of the All-Consuming  Flip - I like the telegraphed threat it presents, and when it dies I get to bring the saga back, which is just the kind of rules interaction I love.

Anax, Hardened in the Forge and Bitterblossom out.
Both token producers which I've had my eye on removing for some time now. I've replaced them with:
Unspeakable Symbol - a Marchesa staple I've wanted for as long as I've had the deck!
Junji, the Midnight Sky - Junji just seems like a lot of fun to play with - I love modal cards and I think the dies trigger works very well in the deck - particularly with Sneak Attack. I'm looking forward to playing this one!

Agadeem's Awakening  Flip out, Xander's Lounge in. Agadeem's Awakening surprised me in that it didn't really work for the deck. A land that lets me lose three life is great, but I rarely had multiple low CMC creatures in my graveyard to target. This will fit in Extus a lot better! Xander's Lounge is just a great fetchable land which I think will improve my manabase a lot.

Island out, Training Center in. I had this lying around and needed more red sources in the deck. Since I have plenty of blue sources and no basic land synergy, this was the natural choice to remove.

Finally, one bling upgrade - Metallic Mimic to Metallic Mimicfoil. This art looks great and it fits the pirate subtheme of the deck!
