Why I built the deck:

M15 had just come out, and I was trying to decide between building an artifact deck or yet another voltron deck at the time. I saw Kurkesh and thought he was unique, since the only similar card at the time was Rings of Brighthearth. It turned out to be a pretty strong deck, capable of winning local tournaments even. I played it for a couple years before taking it apart to make room for a new deck, but I still reassemble it every now and then when I'm feeling nostalgic.

I strongly encourage anyone who's considering building a deck around Kurkesh to do so, even if it isn't this exact list. He's as fun to play as he is underrated.

How the deck wins:

This deck can win in a few ways:

• By destroying all my opponents' stuff with Mycosynth Lattice + Vandalblast, leaving them with nothing and me with everything.

• Through combat, since the deck runs Blightsteel Colossus and all of the eldrazi bigbads, and can generate enough mana to cast them. And if I happen to have Strionic Resonator at the same time, I can double or triple my annihilator triggers. Quadruple even, if the stars align and Rings of Brighthearth is there too.

• With commander damage, if Kurkesh gets equipped with Umezawa's Jitte and goes unanswered for two turns.

• By taking infinite turns with Magistrate's Scepter. It's cheesy, but something about infinite turns in mono red makes me happy.

• By taking everyone else's turns with Mindslaver. Kurkesh allows me to copy the activation, and I can recur it with Trading Post, Trash for Treasure, Goblin Welder, Myr Retriever, etc.

How to play it:

• Use Kurkesh to copy any activated abilities that would make sense to do so. Ramp with Burnished Hart, draw cards with Mind Stone, Hedron Archive, and Dreamstone Hedron, and tutor for things with Kuldotha Forgemaster and Planar Bridge to get what you need.

• Basalt Monolith gives infinite mana with Rings of Brighthearth, but is still useful even without it. If you just have the Monolith and Kurkesh, you can tap it for , use that to untap the Monolith and pay to copy the untap ability, and then respond to the second untap by floating again. To shortcut all of that, you can tap any red source for instead.

• When using Voltaic Key, copy its ability and use it to untap itself. This card is a powerhouse in this deck (every artifact deck, really) and can be used to squeeze more activations out of the other artifacts, especially ones that get counters (Lux Cannon, Magistrate's Scepter, Coalition Relic, Hangarback Walker, etc).

• Remember that Mycosynth Lattice makes everything an artifact; with it, Kurkesh is able to copy any activated ability that isn't a mana ability. This may not seem like much, but being able to copy things like Eye of Ugin's tutor or Buried Ruin's ability can be very useful.
