Mono green walls was the first deck I ever brought to an fnm when I started playing for real about 6 years ago.
This is sort of a tribute to the way I came into competitive magic, and it is the deck I bring when I get tired of the decks that everyone plays and just want to have some fun. It's a deck that focuses on casting a lot of cheap walls that ramp pretty well, then casting Tooth and Nail for Emrakul and Xenagos, or just casting Doran or Ass Formation and then grind your opponent out with cheap, big-assed creatures.
This is obviously not a very efficient deck, but it can still get some wins even against high-tier decks. I have gone 3-2 or 4-1 in fnm several times with it. The deck performs pretty well against mid-range decks. Many of these decks are not capable of dealing with a lot of 4/4's. The deck can consistently activate it's walls in these matchups.
Control can be hard, but if you manage to sneak an Ass Formation into play, they can have a hard time dealing with all the cheap walls. Board out Tooth and Nail + combo here.
The deck is very light on disruption, to say the least. Against combo decks the best stragegy is fast beatdown with Ass Formation, which can sometimes win against slow hands, or to ramp into the combo. A good combo hand can reach 9 mana in turn 5-ish. After board you have access to 3 chalices, which can be very efficient on 0 or 1 against many combo decks.
Many new wall synergies have been printed recently, like
High Alert
. I have not really experimented with any of these cards, but the deck can probably be improved in some way.
I have chosen to splash for blue just for serum visions. This may seem a bit wierd, and it is the thing I am most likely to change in the future. But there are no 1-drop walls that are worth playing, and Vision allows us to set up the first couple of walls. It makes it easier to keep hands, since the deck really needs 2 lands and a couple of walls to work. And it can dig for Tooth and Nails if needed. I have tried playing
Inquisition of Kozilek
instead, but it didn't really work for me. I would rather go all in on the synergies in the deck. Meta decks are so much better at interacting, and every draw counts in this deck. Thus: Serum Visions :).
