Sideboard

A defender deck that uses the ability of Assault Formation and Brave the Sands to go on the offense while keeping your creatures untapped. The deck also ramps to get a Colossus of Akros in play and attacking early in the game. Vent Sentinel can be cast using mana from Axebane Guardian or Sylvan Caryatid. Vent Sentinel is a second win condition using its activated ability to go directly hurting your opponents life total in case they have a way to negate combat damage. Wakestone Gargoyle is an OK substitute to Assault Formation, but it would only be beneficial if you use it with the Colossus of Akros and Rogue's Passage to just swing directly at a player. I won with this deck back when I made it for a Modern tournament at the local game store in 2017. Since then, I have had fun letting new players use it against me when they are starting to get the hang of the game and show them the importance of reading effects on cards and piecing out how they work to form a good combo. I do not play competitively so I am not necessarily looking how to improve my chances to get a win condition a turn sooner buy buying $$$ cards. I think this deck cost me between $45-$50 total when I was piecing it together a couple cards at a time and I am not interested in doubling the cost of the deck for marginal improvements since I am a casual kitchen table player.
