Arixmethes, Slumbering Isle

Commander / EDH GU (Simic)

bradleyrose

Deck mood is that feeling of dread as players await the casting of sea monsters. Deck strategy is to ramp three times, one of which is Arixmethes.

First Five Turns Strategy: Turn 1 - 2: Ramp at least once, +1 mana, with cheap ramp spell. Turn 3: Cast Arixmethes, Slumbering Isle (ramps +2 mana). Turn 4: Ramp with one or two more-expensive ramp spells (ramps +X mana). Turn 5: Start casting sea monsters.

Win Condition: The deck isn't centered around trying to win with Arixmethes. Instead, Arixmethes is one of many large sea monsters, any of which can be a part of the win condition.

Counterspells: The counterspells included aim to be available to cast when you have sea monsters, especially for the first one, when you'll be most tight on mana. So, the counterspells are either "free" or cheap.

Ramp & Card Draw: There's technically more "Later Ramp" and "Card Draw" cards (some of which overlap) than what's listed in those categories, but these other cards are not as dependable/ideal.

Removal: Weakest part of the deck is removal. Bramblecrush and Beast Within provide a couple options for non-creatures; but the bulk of "creature answers" is doing some kind of mass bounce or lockdown, most of which are within the "Splash Monsters" category.

Solo Serpent: Denizen of the Deep is the only Serpent in the deck. Thus, it is a protected card from being cut as I wanted all four of the "big four" of sea monster creature types to be represented in the deck.

Tutoring Policy: I wanted to eliminate any cards that allowed me to search for specific sea monsters. I want to encourage a variety of sea monsters to show up, since some may be more desirable than others, so no tutoring effects except for lands.

Green Mana Sources and Islands: There are a certain number of lands that enable having one green mana on turn one in case your first-turn play is Burgeoning or Exploration. There are a certain number of Islands to enable having three Islands or one Island in hand for casting either Foil or Thwart on Turn Five, when you cast your first sea monster (besides Arixmethes, of course), to help protect it from removal before your next turn.
