$50 budget challenge Tatyova

Commander / EDH GU (Simic) Landfall

DreadedEvil

Friend challenged me to try to come up with a budget deck, so here it is.

Tatyova as the commander means that the primary strategy of the deck is landfall. Since the goal is to trigger Tatyova's landfall abilitiy as often as possible, the obvious choice was to pack the deck with as many other impactful landfall cards as I could fit within the budget.

The best lands for the deck are lands that sacrifice to go find other lands from your deck, as they trigger landfall when they enter and again when the land they found enters the battlefield as well. Since this inevitably means your best lands will be in your graveyard, I chose to use as many cards that let you play lands from the graveyard as the budget would allow.

Also Simic Growth Chamber and Guildless Commons are great because bounce lands can target themselves to bounce back to your hand so once you draw either of them you will always have at least one reliable landfall trigger every turn. With any effect that allows you to play multiple lands per turn, you can repeatedly bounce these back to hand for multiple landfall triggers each turn.

The main early-mid game strategy is to try to out value your opponents by having reliable and frequent card draw, and hopefully a mana advantage through semi frequent ramping and rarely missing land for turn. The end game strategies that are most readily available are to get really big creatures or a very large amount of small creatures from landfall triggers and swinging for big damage. Also there are a number of creatures with stats equal to your land count that can swing in for large amounts of damage.

For more complex / hard to pull off win conditions there are Triskaidekaphile and some infinite combos with Kodama of the East Tree.

If Kodama is on the battlefield and any card that creates a token on Landfall, you can play a bounce land choosing itself to return to hand, trigger Landfall creating a token, trigger Kodama which allows you to play the bounce land again. This triggers Landfall an infinite amount of times until you end the combo by choosing not to use the Kodama trigger.

A similar infinite combo also activates with Meloku the Clouded Mirror. With Meloku you just have to tap a land for mana, use that mana to activate Meloku, picking up that land, creating a token, triggering Kodama allowing you to play the land. This also triggers Landfall infinitely, and you make an infinite number of flying 1/1 tokens.

Just know that neither combo is infinite if Tatyova's on the field. Tatyova's ability is not a "may" ability, and you are forced to draw a card. You can easily deck yourself out if you use this combo.

When I originally finished the deck it was a smidge under $50, but prices fluctuate and as I just made a small swap of a 25¢ card for another 25¢ card, I see that it's gone slightly above the original goal. I'm still going to count it as a $50 budget deck.
