My attempt at a fun budget deck. Tayam is busted even on a $50 budget. When I got this deck it was $49 based on TCGplayer market price of the cheapest version of each card. The prices may have fluctuated a bit but it is still a good budget option and I will discuss further budget options down below.

Themes

  1. Counters - we need plenty of ways to get counters on our creatures to activate Tayam's ability
  2. Reanimation - Tayam's ability lets us get any permanent with CMC less than 3 and allows for busted interactions
  3. Combo - Our goal is to assemble one of several combos to win the game and each piece can be recurred from Tayam
  4. CMC 3 and under - Every card is 3 CMC and under except Renata, Called to the Hunt because I needed one more of her ability and she was the only other option I could find

Combos 1. The main combo to win involves Tayam, Cathodion or Priest of Gix, a way to add 2 extra counters to creatures when they ETB such as Good-Fortune Unicorn and Winding Constrictor and a sac outlet like Viscera Seer with a death trigger drain effect like Zulaport Cutthroat. 2. Tayam with Ashnod's Altar and any two persist or undying creatures equal infinite Tayam activations and once we get a death trigger drain effect we can win 3. Renegade Rallier and Angelic Renewal with a sac outlet equals infinite ETB and death triggers 4. Kitchen Finks and Good-Fortune Unicorn with a sac outlet equals infinite life and infinite death triggers

These are the main combos I have found with the deck. There are some variations to each one you can use based on what you have on board at the time. If I find any others in the deck, I will make sure to update the list.

Budget options

I know this could still be a tough budget for people, so I have included some cheaper options in the maybeboard and will explain what I would swap out here.

  1. Infernal Tribute -> Vampiric Rites
  2. Sevinne's Reclamation -> Victimize
  3. Fanatical Devotion -> Martyr's Cause
  4. Ashnod's Altar -> Altar of Dementia or Martyr's Cause
  5. Night's Whisper -> Sign in Blood

I would recommend switching out Ashnod's Altar as a last resort simply because it does so much work in this deck. It can allow us to get more Tayam activations and is a part of one of the combos we can use to win. If you cannot get one, I would suggest using Altar of Dementia before Martyr's Cause because it can fill your graveyard and with one of our infinite sacrifice engines going, we can use it to mill out the opponent. Night's Whisper has been creeping up in price and is functionally the same as Sign in Blood. I used Night's Whisper to make sure the budget mana base would not accidentally be too hard to cast my 2 CMC draw spells. This has not been a big issue in testing so this would be a great choice for a cheaper budget.

Updates Add

I will be making budget replacements as soon as I get the chance to because some cards have risen beyond the budget since I built this deck. This deck has been amazing to play with and has become a personal favorite. The swaps I think I will be making for now are Infernal Tribute to Vampiric Rites and Night's Whisper to Sign in Blood. These swaps should get me back into the budget but I will make additional adjustments if needed.
