The Era of Eldrazi is upon us! But unlike Zendikar, there's no Gatewatch to protect the vulnerable Modern...

The Eldrazi super-ramp deck is the best way to cast huge Eldrazi in play for massive beats and huge effects. This Heartless Summoning build isn't as swarmy as the Processor /X decks, but it gets way bigger and has more streamlined draws with the inclusion of Conduit of Ruin.

This list was adapted from Jacob Baugh's deck, which took 50th place at SCG Charlotte.

The Lands

  • 1x Cavern of Souls. This utility land not only produces straight-up colorless mana to cast our Oath of the Gatewatch cards that require colorless, but can also make our creatures uncounterable since this is a tribal deck.

  • 4x Eldrazi Temple. This is our second-best Eldrazi enabler, going a long way to casting our big guys. It's almost always going to tap for 2 mana, so even though our creatures cost so much, this land's acceleration shouldn't be taken lightly.

  • 4x Eye of Ugin. 4 copies might seem a little much for a Legendary Land, but we want to see one every game. Eye is probably the best land in the deck, since it reduces the cost of Eldrazi by just by existing on the battlefield, and it has a very relevant tutor ability tacked on. While it doesn't tap for mana at first, when you throw this down next to an Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth, you essentially have a Mishra's Workshop for Eldrazi. And that's absolutely huge; Workshop is only legal in Vintage for a reason!

  • 4x Ghost Quarter. Easy land disruption and colorless mana means GQ is very useful for the deck. Can get rid of bothersome lands like Tron lands and the Nexus lands and can fufill the OotG Eldrazi colorless requirements.

  • 1x Mortuary Mire. A land with a great ability when it enters the battlefield. Just another silver bullet value land that that unfortunately enters the battlefield tapped.

  • 1x Shizo, Death's Storehouse. Just a strictly better Swamp with an ability that lets Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger and Kozilek, the Great Distortion attack through clogged boardstates. Since it's Legendary and we don't particularly need it, only one's included.

  • 5x Swamp. Basic land of choice since the deck's mono-black. Well technically I guess it's colorless with a black splash, but still. Lets us cast important things like Heartless Summoning, Inquisition of Kozilek, and removal.

  • 1x Underground River. A utility land that produces colorless mana without a downside and black mana when necessary for a small cost. Gets better post sideboard when it can activate Spellskite's ability for one less life. Not a necessary inclusion, but a useful one.

  • 4x Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth. Like Eye of Ugin, we run 4 because we'd like to see it every game, and it's not terrible in multiples (though certainly not ideal). This card allows us to make Eye of Ugin a Mishra's Workshop, and allows us to cast our black spells without fear of being Swamp-screwed. Just remember your opponent's lands become Swamps as well!

The Spells

  • 1x Dismember. Utility removal that can get rid of some of the format's biggest threats. Castable for 1 mana if needed, though with Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth paying its full cost isn't unviable.

  • 1x Doom Blade. This card isn't completely dead against Affinity and Tron, which makes it a useful inclusion since those are popular decks. While it may be lacking in other matchups, Doom Blade will still remove a lot of threatening creatures.

  • 3x Expedition Map. Lets us find our necessary lands whenever or can find one of our silver bullet lands. Very useful to include, but not necessary to play.

  • 2x Go for the Throat. If Affinity and Tron didn't exist, this card might just be the best removal spell in the format. Unfortunately, they do, so it becomes dead weight in those games. But in other matchups, it gets around Spellskite and kills pretty much every other threat, making it very good.

  • 4x Heartless Summoning. The main reason to go black . There's one ability we care very much about, and one that we really don't. It doesn't matter if our 10/10s and 12/12 become 9/9s and an 11/11, especially if we're able to power them out on turn 4. And Oblivion Sower still has a big blocking butt. But it's the other ability of Heartless Summoning that makes it amazing in the deck. Making everything cost less is very relevant when they all cost colorless mana! The best thing is, the deck doesn't need to play this card to win, though it certainly helps.

  • 4x Inquisition of Kozilek. The second reason to play black. Inquisition is best discard spell in Modern, according to its price. Certainly less painful than Thoughtseize and gets most of the necessary cards in the format. Great and necessary to protect ourselves against other decks' hate.

  • 1x Slaughter Pact . It's like a Doom Blade loan- something we can use when we have nothing else, then repay its cost down the road- with a bit of interest. Regardless, it's still a nice silver bullet to have and catch our opponent off-guard.

The Sideboard

  • 1x All Is Dust. With Eye of Ugin, this costs practically the same as Damnation for a much more devastating boardwipe that leaves your board intact.

  • 2x Cranial Extraction . Good sideboard tech for things we'd have a hard time dealing with, such as Collected Company, Karn Liberated, Oblivion Stone, etc.

  • 2x Disfigure. Good cheap removal against the likes of RDW/Burn, Affinity, and Infect.

  • 1x Drown in Sorrow. Cheap boardwipe against aggro decks like the above. The scry 2 is more relevant for this deck than the exile on Flaying Tendrils.

  • 1x Night of Souls' Betrayal. Good tech against slower decks that like to outvalue you with small things, like /x Processor Eldrazi and Junk/Abzan.

  • 1x Pithing Needle. Stopping certain activated abilities is crucial when they're the likes of Aether Vial, Oblivion Stone, and Cranial Plating.

  • 1x Slaughter Pact . Extra pact to bring in when quickly destroying those nonblack creatures is absolutely necessary.

  • 2x Spellskite. The card in everyone's sideboard because it helps against so many decks. 'Skite, saving us from those Bolts circa 2011.

  • 2x Vampiric Link. A way to gain life back quickly. Slap it onto one of your huge beaters or on an opponent's creature to stop it from attacking.

  • 2x Warping Wail . This card has 3 very relevant modes to choose from. There are a lot of relevant creatures with power or toughness of 1 in the format, countering a difficult sorcery might just win you the game, and pumping out a chump blocker at instant speed is gravy.

Card Discussion

Obviously please let me know what you think of the deck! Things you like, things you dislike, and suggestions for improvement!

Now for things I think could warrant discussion about the deck:

  • With 4x each of Inquisition of Kozilek and Thought-Knot Seer, we have more discard available than most Abzan/Junk and Jund lists. How much is too much? Or does this feel about right? Especially since it'll be semi-rare that Thought-Knot Seer will actually cost 4 mana.

  • Reality Smasher is pretty good, but also feels really dumb at times. Does it (the feeling or the card) seem weird to anyone but me?

  • I really like Endbringer, though it's not as aggressive as Reality Smasher. If the hypothetical consensus on Reality Smasher is that it should be cut, should Endbringer be its replacement?

  • And of course, sideboard is still in the works (especially with Twin just now being banned) and any help would really be appreciated. Be prepared to potentially debate with me though.
