All Aboard the Chulane Train

Commander / EDH GWU (Bant)

Chulane is a gross commander. It's been said a hundred times before, but the value that he grants is everything any player wants to do in a commander game: ramp hard and draw cards.

You will like this deck if you're a fan of having access to frankly unfair amounts of mana, and if you enjoy holding a quarter of your library in your hand.

When I was building this deck I wanted Chulane's trigger to act as more of a replacement effect, in that I wanted to cast a creature, draw my card, play a land which I could then immediately tap to cast another creature and so on and so forth. For this reason, it was super important to fill the deck with low CMC creatures that still hand utility and, more importantly, lands that enter play untapped. I don't usually mind having guildgates and lifelands in my EDH decks because of how casual my playgroup is, but for this deck in particular I invested more money into the manabase than I normally would.

With those things in mind, the aim of the game is to play creatures and gain life. 80% of the time you're going to win off of Aetherflux Reservoir , that's just the truth of it. You can get on a roll pretty early in the game, and if the Reservoir is out it's going to be the end of someone. Of course, it's going to draw peoples ire and will probably get blasted off the face of the world, so our secondary win conditions including some tapping shenanigans via cards like Opposition and Glare of Subdual to win off of Throne of the God-Pharaoh , and we can even swing in for stacks of damage if we have Tetsuko Umezawa, Fugitive in play. So if the Reservoir bites the dust, we still have ways of moving forward.

Chulane, by the nature of what he grants us, is going to get removed stacks of the time. That said, because the deck generates huge mana that doesn't really become a massive problem. It's annoying when he starts costing 9+ mana, but all that serves to do is slow us down just a bit. Zendikar Resurgent is our redundancy if Chulane somehow gets locked in the command zone, as it effectively does the same thing.

Lastly, just a quick shoutout to the decks MVP: Alhammarret's Archive . When this card hits the board it is going to significantly accelerate your win clock. Too many times I've had the Archive out with Chulane and Tatyova, Benthic Druid in play, and I've just churned through my library. When those three cards are in play, you've basically won the game.

Good luck. Have fun.
