Rampy, Big creature-y, Gruul-y goodness!
I wanted to go for something different after the release of BNG, and I really think Xenagos, God of Revels has made Gruul very playable - without having to pack it full of devotion!
I'm hoping to take this not only to FNM, but to an upcoming PTQ - My first ever! :D
Any ideas would be great, but please look through my reasoning for including the cards I have first. :)
Creatures
Elvish Mystic: I find these worry my opponent turn 1, and turn 2 can give me a Domri! Super pressure! Plus late game, it's a great chump blocker.
Sylvan Caryatid: Great mana fixing, great early defender, and if it has to be - a late game chump blocker too.
Boon Satyr: Gruul lacks a bit in awesome 3 drop creatures, but I ran this over Reverent Hunter as this deck isn't devotion based, flash can be super useful, and I can chuck it on a fatty late game to make it even huger-er! And as he isn't -essential- I'm not losing a heap when he's sided out.
Ghor-Clan Rampager: Suprise Trample Time!! This works so awesomely well in this deck. Especially if you happen to chuck it on a monstrous Stormbreath, with it's power being doubled with Xenagod, plus this on top of all that... 18 damage in the air. With trample in case they had a flier.
Polukranos, World Eater: Huge body turn 3, Xenagod enabler, weenie killer, and can get even bigger and silly with Kalonian Hydra & Xenagod.
Kalonian Hydra: This + Monstrous Stormbreath + Xenagod = this deck's best combo.
Stormbreath Dragon: Evasion, haste, pro-white, and can get bigger, and then bigger and bigger with everything else in the deck.
Xenagos, God of Revels: Makes things hasty and huge, and when the board presence is strong enough to make him a dude, it's just a bonus.
Planeswalkers
Garruk, Caller of Beasts: Super creature finder, and generally scary to have out - often sided out in aggro match-ups though.
Xenagos, the Reveler: More creatures, more mana, yes please!!
Domri Rade: Fights big annoying things, or finds me creatures, and all on hopefully turn 2!
Other spells/Land
Mizzium Mortars: For Brimaz and similarly annoying 4 toughness creatures, or post-combat to finish off a biggie, or a board wipe against weenies/fast decks.
Mutavault: Great whether I'm running low on land or creatures, I chose this over Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx, because whilst this deck ramps, I don't want to empty my hand asap, plus Mutavault can basically be a creature outta the way of those pesky Verdicts!
Temple of Abandon: Bit slow, but I'd rather have a way of fixing my draws, and it helps with Domri!
Sideboard:
Mistcutter Hydra: Anti blue. Simples.
flesh//blood: Extra fighting for creature heavy decks/mirror match up, or a thwack to the face before they can kill them off against control
Plummet: There are a few annoying fliers in standard right now. Not enough to justify a Mana-intense Windstorm, but with Plummet, Domri, Stormbreath and other SB cards I should have enough ways to get rid.
Clan Defiance: Insane in the mirror/creature heavy decks
Shock: Against aggro, weenies, etc
Polis Crusher: Fatty with trample, who can get bigger (and then bigger in this deck) and can act as a Naturalize - plus he can't be D-Sphered! Yay!
