Am Bush: The Tale of a Beetle (Ambush Beetle PDH)

Pauper EDH BRG (Jund) Control Goodstuff Midrange Pauper

Jerenstein-Bear

Beetle aggro, beetle aggro! When I was combing over potential pauper commanders some time ago, I came across Giant Ambush Beetle and was immediately intrigued by the idea of using it in an aggro list. While 5 mana is a steep price, it is almost always going to be immediately impactful through essentially being spot removal on a body and that theme of fast, impactful value runs like an undercurrent through the rest of the deck. The general gameplan for this deck is to put high-octane, cheap attackers on the board, pump them for good measure, and to do that fast enough that the opponent either can't recover or can't keep up. There are a few tricks here and there like Fake Your Own Death and Unearth, but a vast majority of the deck is built to effectively put a wide range of mana on the field and to subsequently dump that mana into critters.

A notable series of interactions to pay attention to: - There are a creature or two in the deck that eat lands when played, and plenty of lands that you'll be putting into the graveyard to get other lands from the deck, so a few slots have been dedicated to helping you recycle those lands to help keep land drops consistent. The most prominent player in this cycle is Scaretiller, but Cartographer and Eccentric Farmer are notable for being etb effects, meaning they can be reused if protected by Fake Your Own Death or Return to Action, returned to the battlefield with Unearth, or returned to the hand with one of your two ninjutsu creatures Dokuchi Shadow-Walker and Mukotai Ambusher.
