Anafenza Pattern Rector (CMND)

Commander / EDH* BGW (Abzan, Junk)

RealLifeBear

Pattern Rector converted from Canlander to EDH.

This deck is INCREADIBLY fun to play! Even though you are winning the same (which Isn't exactly true) usually through a long line of cards, you're never "winning" the same, so every combo line and winning board state is unique.

As this is my personal "bling out" deck, this deck may look extremely expensive to build, however the only NECCESSARY high expense card needed for the deck to function is Academy Rector , which even I have a gold bordered "illegal play" copy that is cheaper and most places and groups have no problem with (though always check first, and no is no).

Before going over how the deck is played, it should be stated that this deck is (for the most part) VERY difficult to pilot. In some manner, the deck is actually quite redundant, as the one and only Ben Wheeler says "this deck is the hydra of combo decks, cut of one combo and two more grow back", and there are always different lines at your disposal to win. Despite all this redundancy however, it is still very easy to misplay without knowing it and throw the game, as in some regards we combo slowly and our cards are "bad" (discussed later). So, if you are newer to magic or aren't quite iron clad on remembering every card in your deck, I would caution against building it (for now of course, this deck is still hella fun).

So How Does the Deck Actually Work

The deck structure or shell goes by many names, and comes in many shapes and sizes and gets its power from the fact that its an amorphous combo blob. The root of this deck, in short 3 cards Academy Rector , Pattern of Rebirth , and Protean Hulk , and can in essence be described as a Hulk or " Flash less Hulk" deck. The most straight forward and ideal way of winning is:

  1. turn 1: cmc 1 dork
  2. turn 2: cheap sac outlet (as long as you curve out, t1 and t2 are interchangeable)
  3. turn 3: play rector thanks to dork and begin the combo

If you get to this point and your opponents don't have any interaction AND Hulk isn't in your hand, you've won. HOWEVER, if your opponents do interact, or as is likely, you do not have this exact hand of cards (3 lands, dork, sac outlet, and rector) you will win on a later turn, or combo through different means.
