i entered the Chicago state tournament on oct. 11 of 2014 with my original version of this deck Angry Man Bear Pig- after a noticeable loss i redesigned my deck and this is the outcome. i am entering in the PTQ this coming weekend. so any and all comments/suggestions are welcome.
this a mid range creature base deck, utilizing mana ramp to combo out large monsters in a single turn. the key card in this deck is Chord of Calling. this allows me to adjust to any situation and is the reason why i only run one of many of my creatures.also this card combos with Bow of Nylea using the bows last ability i can bring back to the battlefield any creature that was sent to the graveyard. along with any Chord of Calling that i may have used already, then conveniently provides a shuffle to get those chords off the bottom of my deck.
this dimi-god/pre-god/goatboy Xenagos, the Reveler is another key part of this deck becuse he provides valuable mana early game, and blockers if need. he allows me to combo out multiple cards at once if cast in the right order.
Elvish MysticCourser of KruphixSylvan CaryatidRattleclaw Mystic all double as my mana ramp, and anti agro/bantha fodder line of defense. also caryatid provides good defense against control decks to provide a little breathing room against some one trying to burn out your mana ramp when you are drawing short on land.
then we got this mana dumpster. Genesis Hydra is mainly in this deck as a support role for chords and to assist in bringing out my bow or ascendancy
Its the Bee's knee's!!! the one and only Hornet Queen is in here for namely two reasons one; antiflyers and two; elspith you know... because that woman is nuts! (not to mention she needs to lose my number). also queen combos with my planeswalker really well to get massive amounts of mana.
i know the deck is lacking in removal main but i didn't want to wast a creature spot in my main board if i didn't have to so this is where Polukranos, World Eater comes in. spending my large amounts of excess mana to destroy a creature or 2 is nice. BUT! that's not all. combo him with Bow of Nylea and its unbelievable. attack first then after declaring attackers step but before declaring blockers step use his ability. then deal 1 damage to all the creatures you can. killing them all and your hydra in the process (small price to pay) this works because Polukranos has deathtouch and as his oracle text stats he himself deals the damage thus only needing one damage to kill a target
need a little agro in your step? not with this deck! Savage Knuckleblade and Stormbreath Dragon have you covered. pared with the ramp in this deck thanks to Rattleclaw Mystic you can turn 3 swing for 4 damage with either of these nasty beasties. thus putting the pressure on you opponent to waste removal early game or die.
don't think that drawing creatures straight from your deck to the field is enough "draw power" in its self, fine i got Temur Ascendancy in here to help things along. couple this with Savage Knuckleblade late game using his "return to hand" rule to draw cards till your mana runs dry. sure 6 mana for one draw isn't that good but its not that bad when you can do it EVERY TURN! just in case that isnt enough then i got Life's Legacy. use during you'r second main phase after attacking with a creature. (now that's using and abusing!).
Last but not least are the gods in this deck. raining down judgement onto the battlefield with all there super vain needs for devotion. first up we got Thassa, God of the Sea, this lady never sees battle herself but plays a great support role. combine her scry ability and Courser of Kruphix to help you control your draw and get even more lands into play. Still that's not it, your opponent got some pesky blockers you cant deal with? or afraid to attack because your creature might die? no worries, use Thassa's activated ability to swing straight into the're life points with multiple creatures.
next up we got P.E.T.A.'s worst nightmare! Nylea, God of the Hunt is here and she brought the BBQ sauce! this god sees battle more than the other 3 due my extremely high green concentration, but i use her as a mana dumpster to boost my creatures. also pair her trample with Bow of Nylea's deathtouch to swing for lethal almost anytime.
Finally we got this super adorable hooved maniac. Xenagos, God of Revels has ascended and wants to party! he starts off by giving me the option to give creatures haste. so that they can hit the ground running! in addition he can double any creatures power, paired with nylea's mana dump you can make a serious threat out of any creature. this works well with Life's Legacy to draw a massive amount of cards!. if you triple combo Xenagos, Nylea, and Thassa its almost a sure win!.
i truly think this deck can go far if played well. with its great synergy and ability to respond to most any situation, if it could possibly take top 8 in my next tournament that would be great. wish me luck and comment on anything that might need tweaked. thanks!
