Animar (Every card < $1 "Cedh")

Commander / EDH RUG (Temur)

superman112299

An attempt to make an Animar deck where every card (besides Animar) is less than $1.

The main goal of the deck is to cast a bunch of creatures, and win through either a really big Animar or combo. Without access to Walking Ballista, our main combo piece is going to be Reckless Fireweaver. With him out, we can win by either infinitely casting Ancestral Statue or infinitely casting Duplicant by casting Duplicant and bouncing Artisan of Kozilek then casting Artisan of Kozilek and bouncing Duplicant with Brinelin in play. This sounds like a one in a million scenario, but it is actually a one card line with Fierce Empath. Cast Fierce Empath find Brinelin, Cast Brinelin bouncing Empath, cast Empath finding Duplicant, cast Duplicant bouncing Empath with Brinelin, cast Empath finding Artisan, cast Artisdan bouncing Duplicant, cast Duplicant bouncing Artisan, exiling all of your opponent's creatures and making Animar infinitely huge. This line costs 2U and 3G at minimum, which isn't that bad given the budget constraints. We also have a Wildwood Scourge that for 1G will always be almost always be just as big as Animar. When all else fails, beat face with Animar and Scourge.

The mana base is unsurprisingly where we suffer the most. Finding non basics that don't come in tapped is pretty difficult under $1. Luckily, we do have a few. Holdout Settlement and Survivor's Encampment turn all of our creatures into worse Birds of Paradise, Exotic Orchard will frequently get us all of our colors (though is useless t1 if we go first), and the the enemy painlands are even great budgetless options and so are autoincludes here. Game Trail and Cinder Glade need more difficult conditions to be met, but Game Trail can come down untapped semi-frequently early game and Cinder Glade can come down untapped semi-frequently late game so we're taking them too. Of course there is also Command Tower. Here are some of the less optimized choices. Unclaimed Territory: isn't super great for us, but can fix for Animar and we can even name elf in situations where we need to get our dork down but isn't optimal since we can only choose one. Basic Mountain: most people never recommend a basic mountain, but we're running one to tutor up with Sakura Tribe Elder if we need it for Animar, plus we don't really have a ton of other options. Pinecrest Ridge: many people wouldn't even consider this card remotely good, and it is porbably the biggest eyebrow-raising land in the list, but I think its better to get Animar out with it and not having a mana open next turn than waiting a turn to cast Animar because we're playing gain lands.

I really like how the list plays, but I haven't purchased the list yet or tried it out against other decks yet. Lmk what you think and I'll make updates to the list based on what works and what doesn't.

Note: Each card in the list was $0.99 or less as of 10-1-2021 Note: TappedOut says Ghostly Pilferer and Sea-Dasher Octopus are more than a dollar, but on TCG Player their promo pack versions are $0.96 and $0.99 so I let them slide.
