My first Modern deck!

I splash green for Destructive Revelry and I'm considering Atarka's Command.

On October, 7th 2015 Atarka's Command hit 60 Euro/playset.I think I'll wait for it to come back down around 20 Euro/playset before buying (rotation 2016?).

About creatures

Show

Goblin Guide and Monastery Swiftspear are the main creatures of this deck, they both cost , both have haste, both are worth their cost after dealing 3-4 damage.
Goblin Guide has an apparent downside, your opponent draws lands: yes, they can occasionally draw lands, but you get to know what they draw, that's always good.
Monastery Swiftspear has 1 power, but it usually hits for 2 or 3 damages thanks to prowess. I think "turn1 Swiftspear, turn2 Lava Spike and Lightning Bolt" is one of the best opening for this deck.
Grim Lavamancer is a good 1drop that consistently deals damage if left unanswered. It requires cards in your graveyard, so it is useful from turn3 and on, when your graveyard is full of Lightning Bolts, Lava Spikes, ...Also, fetchlands fuel this little guy. 2 copies are more than enough, since it is a dead card in hand for at least a couple of turns.
Vexing Devil is good. It is a 4/3 for or deals 4 damages. If the opponent chooses the former, he/she has to deal with a 4/3 (maybe on turn1), using a removal or a creature; if the opponent chooses the latter, you deal 4 damages, more than our best spell, Lightning Bolt. I still have to buy these.
Eidolon of the Great Revel is a double edged sword: punishes all players, but we can burn the opponent really fast, so it is good.
Ash Zealot adds some graveyard hate to the deck and it is a decent creature, 2/2 with haste and first strike for .

About non-creature spells

These spells are cheap and do damage. Most of them. The higher the ratio damage/cost, the better the card.

Lightning Bolt is our best spell, instant speed 3 damage 1 mana. Collateral Damage , Shard Volley, Lava Spike and Rift Bolt are 3 damage 1 mana spells, with some downsides: two require sacrifices, one is sorcery-speed, the last is sorcery-speed with delayed effect. They all do their job, but try to keep Lightning Bolt on your hand as long as you can, using other spells first. I'm plannig to remove Shard Volley or Collateral Damage if I get Atarka's Commands.
Magma Jet filters your draws, improving your next turn, it helped me a lot even if it does only 2 damage for . I'm plannig to remove it if I get Atarka's Commands.
Searing Blaze is really good with a fetchland, it can deal 3 damage to the opponent and helps to keep the board clean.
Skullcrack deals 3 damage for , there are better spells, but it also prevents lifegain and damage prevention for a turn which is really good against lifegain decks.
Destructive Revelry gets rid of enchantments and artifacts and deals 2 damage. It costs , that's why we run Stomping Ground.
Leyline of Punishment has the same purpose of Skullcrack, but it is an enchantment: it is really good against lifegain decks, but nothing else. I'm planning to replace them with 4 Atarka's Command, but I will keep them until I playtest a bit more.
Blood Moon and Molten Rain shut down decks with lots of non basic lands. Blood Moon affects your lands too, while Molten Rain deals 2 damage to the controller of the land.
Dragon's Claw: against other Burn/RDW. It "transforms" a Lightning Bolt to your face in a Shock. I run 2 because you don't need more than 1 on the battlefield.
Rending Volley : well, it kills Deceiver Exarch, Pestermite, ... but, that's more important, it cannot be countered. removal against key combos is extremely good. Before there was Combust: it deals 1 more damage (thus it kills Siege Rhino) but it costs more.
Volcanic Fallout deals with hordes and deals 2 damage to each player. It can be useful against tribal decks like Elves, Merfolks or decks like affinity. It can even stop Splinter Twin combo with Pestermite. Instant speed mass removal, and it cannot be countered, costs but it is worth its place in sideboad.

REMOVED Leyline of Punishment: I never really used it. Against life gain deck could really help; it can negate part of the upside of Kor Firewalker or Auriok Champion, but is not worth a slot in this deck.
REMOVED Molten Rain: while land destruction could help against some decks (Tron/Amulet Bloom), I usually don't draw it when needed. Often it is just 2 damage for 3 mana. Not worth it.

About lands

Show

Fetchlands like Bloodstained Mire and Wooded Foothills are relatively cheap (about 10$ each) and help thinning your deck and digging for that Stomping Ground when needed.
Avoid fetching for Stomping Ground if you don't need , you get 2 damage or a tapped land, in both cases a Mountain is better.
Cinder Glade is a new land that taps for or . It comes into play untapped if you have 2 or more basic lands. Since we usually don't need before turn three and we run only fetches and basic Mountains, it can easily substitute one Stomping Ground .
Mountains fill the land slot after you choose your non-basic lands. I want to play 18 total lands (8 fetches and 2-3 shocklands, so I need up to 7-8 Mountains).
Remember, your non-basic lands become less useful when you play Blood Moon or Magus of the Moon. Keep that in mind if you have to use Destructive Revelry.

Mulligan Guide

You can usually keep hands with 2 to 4 lands. 4 lands is situational, if you have 1-2 good creatures and those lands are fetches, keep it.If your opponent mulligans, try to keep it, you will have a little card advantage.
5+ lands is always a mulligan, you need spells to win, not lands.
1 land is tricky, it strongly depends on your hand (2-3 creatures, 2-3 spell at cost 1 is acceptable) and on your opponent (e.g. I lost games against Tron because he exiled my lonely Mountain with Karn on turn 3). Keep in mind that this deck performs really well with 2-3 lands, more lands means you don't have spells to play, fewer lands means you can play only a spell (or none) each turn.

Sideboard Guide

Show

Abzan:

Big efficient creatures, played with Noble Hierarch or Birds of Paradise. They may play some lifegain (Kitchen Finks, ...) so Skullcrack is important. Since they play creatures (Tarmogoyf, ...), your creatures are less effective: remove some of them to add Blood Moon if they play a lot of non-basics, Rending Volley to remove some big threat while you hit.

Affinity:

Probably faster than you, you need to slow it down. Add Volcanic Fallout to clean up, Destructive Revelry to destroy big creatures or key artifacts, remove Vexing Devil and/or Monastery Swiftspear.

Amulet Bloom:

Blood Moon is mandatory, Destructive Revelry could help against Amulet of Vigor (remember that you cannot play Destructive Revelry with a Blood Moon in play). Remove Searing Blaze and Magma Jet: Searing Blaze doesn't kill Primeval Titan, Magma Jet is not efficient enough.

Burn:

Mirror match, you will need Volcanic Fallout if they play a lot of creatures and Dragon's Claw is mandatory, it could make you survive 2-3 turns more. Skullcrack is needed only if the opponent plays Lightning Helix, you can remove it otherwise.

Infect:

Another deck faster than you. You need removal (Searing Blaze and Volcanic Fallout are good). If they play a lot of non-basics, go for Blood Moon. You could even block, if your opponent doesn't have protection from colors or unblockable creatures (unlikely). You could use your Grim Lavamancer to block and tap it to deal 2 damage. Skullcrack isn't needed.

Tokens:

If they play Auriok Champion or Kor Firewalker your game is probably over, but you could try to kill everything with Volcanic Fallout (doesn't target creatures) and Skullcrack (damage cannot be prevented, therefore Volcanic Fallout can kill creatures with protection from red). For everything else, you can slow their game with Destructive Revelry to destroy their enchantments and Blood Moon if they play a lot of non-basics. Ash Zealot is good against Lingering Souls and Eidolon of the Great Revel can do miracles.

Tron RG:

Tron RG tries to assemble all Urza's Lands at turn 3 and play some big threat. You can outrun them or, if you don't succeed, block them with Blood Moon. It often plays Nature's Claim, so Blood Moon will just slow your opponent for a couple of turns. Beware they also play a lot of artifacts and Oblivion Stone to get rid of your Moons, so Destructive Revelry is a good card. Remove creatures, you don't want to attack against a blocking Wurmcoil Engine.

Tron U:

Tron U is a control deck. I never played against it. You could easily outrun it, play Eidolon of the Great Revel as soon as you can. If they can't bounce/remove it, you win.

Maybeboard

Show

Atarka's Command looks really good, it can replace Magma Jet and Shard Volley. I will probably acquire 4 of it.
Slagstorm could replace Volcanic Fallout . It deals 3 damage instead of 2, it can deal 3 damage to creatures or players (you can choose), but it is a sorcery and it can be countered. Very situational, it depends on your local meta.

On a Budget

For a budget build, remove Eidolon of the Great Revel, Goblin Guide, Vexing Devil and add 4 Spark Elemental , 4 Hellspark Elemental and 2 Magma Jet. If you remove Fetchlands, also remove Shocklands and green splash (without fetchlands you wiil rarely have both a green spell and mana to cast it). Replace them with mountains.You can also consider Keldon Marauders and you can also remove 2 mountains to free up space for other cards.

In the sideboard, remove Blood Moon and Destructive Revelry and add Blood Knight if you play against a lot of white decks.
