Arlinn on the Midrange (Jund reconstructed!)

Standard* BRG (Jund) Competitive Control Midrange

abby315

Sideboard

Jund 'em out, swing in with a hot werewolf lady or a lady literally on fire!

I am still in the process of figuring out the best build for KLD standard, suggestions welcomed!

I am not interested in building delirium--if I had the money for Grim Flayer and Liliana, the Last Hope I would be playing G/B delirium right now.

"Jund 'em Out" doesn't just mean value. It means picking apart the enemy's path to victory. It means crushing dreams and ruining plans, THEN beating face with big dudes. Hand disruption, difficult to remove creatures, big scary planeswalkers, and a healthy mix of removal make up the core gameplan. Welcome to Jund!

The goal is to use removal and hand disruption to mess up your opponent's game plan (whether it's taking removal spells, their big ol' Ulamog, or their walkers), then stick a threat of your own and win relatively quickly.

The deck wins by going wide with tokens and Arlinn Kord  , or giving trample to a big guy like Tireless Tracker or buffed Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet, or with Chandra, Flamecaller, or, last resort, through Hissing Quagmire beats. These win conditions resist easy removal but put out a lot of pressure.

Current Build: This deck is under dramatic reconstruction! My KLD from the beginning was Shota's Grixis Control list and it's been AWESOME to play, but my LGS has 3 other copies running around that play Dynavolt Tower over Thing in the Ice   , which is crushing in the mirror. But I love TiTi and a Dynavolt list is boring--so time to switch to Jund, my fav since always. :)

Under construction!

Tireless Tracker is our main source of card advantage and a lategame beater. She's is an okay turn three play, but it is best to play her t4 or later when you can immediately drop a land and get a Clue.

Sylvan Advocate is fairly self-explanatory. Remember that they buff your Hissing Quagmires!

Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet: Play him later in the game when you have a chance to get some value as soon as he hits the field; buff him and his zombie army with Arlinn Kord  .

Arlinn Kord  :

Let me just talk about Arlinn for a second, because she's a little bit confusing to play. The best way to use her in this deck is to throw her down on a relatively safe board and make a 2/2 wolf, causing her to flip. If you are afraid of some direct burn (Fiery Temper) you can +1 her instead and swing in with whatever you've got on board, but her flip side is the most useful side for this deck.

Arlinn, Embraced by the Moon   does everything. She bolts, which is incredible, but what's even better is that her +1 anthem buffs our Thopter tokens, our Sylvan Advocates, our Chandra tokens. If you can stick her for a turn or two she will end the game. People seem to forget how strong trample is as an ability, but Arlinn has single-handedly won me games by allowing me to break through boardstalls on the ground and start getting an advantage. When paired with Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet she's simply massive, because usually with her anthem effect opponents are forced to block and fork over some Zombies.

This deck is built to give you the best chance against an UNKNOWN meta, like modern Jund. Luckily, these colors also provide all the sideboard possibilities you need against decks of all kinds; therefore if a certain deck begins to dominate the pro or local meta, feel free to change the mb and sb removal choices to fit the matchups you're having trouble in. This sideboard is currently meant to be transformational, taking out all of the sweepers for a better matchup vs control :

UNDER CONSTRUCTION! Sorry!

This panel is for popular card choices I have omitted!

Westvale Abbey   If Westvale Abbey   was a Mana Confluence with the sacrifice-transform ability, it would be in there. It messes with what is already a difficult manabase. I don't think it's worth the games where I have to mulligan down to 6 or 5 because it's not a Mountain.

Also, if this deck has 5+ tokens or creatures sitting around, I'm probably in full control of the game. Otherwise those creatures would be whittled down by blocking or saccing, or my opponent's removal. At that point, the last thing I want to do is wipe my own board to put out a threat that can be To the Slaughtered, Clip Wings'd, Declaration in Stoned, or chump blocked.

Pulse of Murasa : Very similar situation to Kolaghan's Command. It FELT useful in games, gaining 12+ life a game and recurring some creatures, but even in those games where I played it multiple times, I would lose. Removal spells are much more important to the deck.

Ob Nixilis Reignited: I do like this planeswalker and I will keep an eye on him, but he feels less impactful the more I see him on enemy boards. He may be a sideboard option since he offers solid card advantage.

UNDER CONSTRUCTION :)

+1s, comments, and feedback greatly appreciated. Reserve a seat on the Jund hype train!

Updates Add

Since my grixis control deck has been hated out of my local meta by OTHER grixis control decks (I can't stand control mirrors), I am toying with my favorite midrange deck again.

I do not want to build delirium. I do want to play Arlinn. Those are my only build conditions right now.

Help much appreciated! I'm pretty solid on the removal suite--it works like a charm in Grixis and only gets better when you're also putting out pressure--but the rest needs to be optimized for impactful t2-5 plays and maximum strength as a flexible midrange deck!
