As long as Athreos is on the battlefield, any creature with a Coin counter on it that dies or is put into exile will return to the battlefield under your control. Athreos puts on Coin counter on any creature - yours or your opponents' - at the end of your turn, and this list includes several ways to manipulate Coin counters, either by reusing and redistributing spent counters (using cards like The Ozolith, Resourceful Defense, and Nesting Grounds) or by generating extra Coin counters on your creatures (via Strionic Resonator, Contractual Safeguard, and Lithoform Engine).

There are three main ways to abuse coin counters in this list:

• Put counters on your opponents' most powerful creatures, and then steal them by wiping the board (through Wrath effects that Athreos can live through, like Kaya's Wrath, Wrath of God, and Damn) or employing pinpoint targeted removal (like Vindicate and Anguished Unmaking). Temporary exile effects (such as Flickerwisp and Angel of Serenity) are great here, because if you exile a creature with a Coin counter, you steal it even if it would otherwise come back into play under an opponents' control.

• Use Coin counters to negate "sacrifice this creature" or "exile this creature" downsides (such as Mangara of Corondor, Peacekeeper, Kami of False Hope, Puppeteer Clique, and Whip of Erebos).

• Put Coin counters on creatures with powerful ETB or death triggers (such as Ashen Rider and Gray Merchant of Asphodel), and then sacrifice them (using effects such as Phyrexian Tower, High Market, Viscera Seer, Plumb the Forbidden, and Deadly Dispute) to trigger or re-trigger their abilities.
