My Plan is Compleat (Counters EDH)

Commander / EDH* Counters Four Color GWUB

So this is my attempt at an Atraxa, Praetors' Voice deck centered around +1/+1 counters. It grew out of a Simic deck helmed by Vorel of the Hull Clade , but the addition of white and black have given me some great new options like Cathars' Crusade and Winding Constrictor , so I felt like it was worth making the switch.

I'm slowly working on foiling it out - I'm most of the way there as it currently stands; everything but a few foils that are super-pricey or cards that don't come in foil yet - but I'm always open to adding new cards. Any suggestions would be welcome. Cuts to make? Cards on my list that won't pull their own weight, or cards I definitely should add to my list? If you can think of any improvements I could make, definitely let me know!

Deck All-Stars:

  • Atraxa, Praetors' Voice : Obviously the commander here is outstanding. Not only does she have a flavorful, tasty keyword soup (flying, vigilance, deathtouch, and lifelink), but she also gives you an automatic proliferate trigger at the end of each of your turns. If you like counters - and what are you doing here if you don't?! - she is a pretty fantastic way of ensuring you get more of them! She's not as explosive as some of the 99, but she works well as a steady value engine, and also gives us the colors we need for some fantastic counter-based cards.

  • Contagion Engine : The -1/-1 counters on ETB are handy, but what makes it even better is the DOUBLE Proliferate activated ability. Proliferate those -1/-1 counters, proliferate all your +1/+1 and charge counters, and then do it all again! As a tap ability, you'll probably only be able to access it once a turn, but still!

  • Cytoplast Manipulator : Get a +1/+1 counter onto an enemy creature (even their Commander!) using one of your Graft cards (including Manipulator herself), Forgotten Ancient , Experiment Kraj , etc., then steal it for yourself! Nothing is quite as heartwarming as delivering fatal Commander damage to someone via their own Commander.

  • Deepglow Skate : Bananas in this deck, especially with any of the counter doublers/increasers. If you have much at all in the way of counters on your permanents, this can often be a wincon right there. Keep in mind that you can choose which permanents...and they don't have to be yours!

  • Doubling Season : Speaking of doubling, this is also amazing. Stack this with Deepglow Skate , and you'll end up quadrupling your counters (and Vorel of the Hull Clade can turn it to octupling with certain kinds of permanents)! Keep in mind that Doubling Season doesn't affect paying planeswalker costs (i.e., ticking them up using loyalty abilities isn't doubled) but it does affect effects (which means that when your planeswalkers enter the battlefield, the loyalty counters placed on them is doubled, which almost invariably means that they come in ready to ultimate, or almost)...it's a shame I don't currently have any planeswalkers in this deck!

  • Fertilid : Repeatable ramp is wonderful in Commander, and the fact that you'll get a lot more than two uses out of this dude with Atraxa around makes it even better.

  • Forgotten Ancient and Managorger Hydra : These two creatures will grow so huge so quickly (and even more so in a multiplayer game!). You'll average at LEAST one +1/+1 counter per player turn.

  • Gilder Bairn : Not all that great by himself, just because it can be tricky to tap him; in a vacuum, Vorel of the Hull Clade is better (though Bairn can also double planeswalker loyalty counters, I don't have any planeswalkers in this deck). Where he really shines is in tandem with Experiment Kraj . If you have both of them out, tap Kraj to add a +1/+1 counter to Bairn, and now you're cooking with gas! You can spend a few mana and untap Kraj to double counters on one permanent; tap to add a +1/+1 counter to something; rinse and repeat as long as you have mana.

  • Hardened Scales , Pir, Imaginative Rascal , and Winding Constrictor : Each of these ensures that you add one more counter than you normally would (and yes, they stack!). This can turn each of Atraxa's end-step proliferations into dumping multiple counters on your permanents each turn! (Keep in mind that Hardened Scales only affects +1/+1 counters, but the other two affect all counters.)

  • Opal Palace : Especially if folks like to kill poor Atraxa for posing a threat, this will come in handy; every time she comes back she will be beefier and harder to kill (and have lots of +1/+1 counters on herself that she can begin proliferating ASAP!).

  • Viral Drake : The fact that the Proliferate activated ability here is not a tap ability is super-helpful, since it means you can use it multiple times a turn as long as you've got the mana. It's also good that this is an Infect creature (with flying for evasion, even!), and can get the infection train started rolling up on your opponent all by itself. They let one attack through, giving them one poison counter, and suddenly they'll find those counters racking up, especially once Atraxa is out.

  • Vorel of the Hull Clade : Let's end with the former Commander of this deck, who works beautifully with most of our counters. He can double them as a tap ability, which helps turn that incremental growth into exponential growth. (Just keep in mind that he doesn't work with planeswalkers.)

For the most part, this is much less of a combo deck than many; it just has lots and lots of synergy. That said, there are definitely some combo-esque pieces (most notably Experiment Kraj ). Here are some particularly helpful combinations of cards to remember:

Updates Add

Added some tasty new tech from War of the Spark. I haven't seen a ton from M20 or C19 that immediately jumped out at me for Atraxa - maybe Thought Sponge? - but we will see what Throne of Eldraine is bringing up.
