Sideboard

A new brew for Standard taking U/W without a third color, and no more flash like we were able to enjoy in the previous block. With flash disappearing I've decided to go the route of permission, running 8 main board counters along with draw and control which is sure to have opponents cursing and scooping if they can't win quickly.

Main Board:

AEtherling - He is the main win-condition (well second, main win-con being scoops!). We all know his power and ability to frustrate. In the case of Slaughter Games we do have a second main board win-con in....

Elspeth, Sun's Champion - She is another way to win if protected, which this deck will do well, and as you know she serves as a great pseudo-mass removal also!

Detention Sphere - This card deserves a 4-of now in new Standard, what with Indestructible Gods floating around and all. Not too mention it's just fantastic removal.

Azorius Charm & Sphinx's Revelation - The main sources of draw power, while the charm can serve as early protection or mid-late game life the odd time also.

Dissolve , [[essence scatter], Negate, Syncopate - The counters which make up the main board 12. IMO the best counters available in Standard ATM.

Jace, Architect of Thought - Of course, more card advantage while serving as protection against 1/1's.

Supreme Verdict - Wouldn't be safe without this handy board wipe!

Mutavault can be a problem for a deck like this at times, so why not have some to block there own and trade or do some damage of their own on an empty controlled board.

Sideboard:

Pithing Needle - Used for opposing planeswalkers and of course a near auto-win in the AEtherling war.

Solemn Offering - Although this is sorcery speed, my only other option was Sundering Growth and with nothing to populate and it's a bit more mana restrictive, I figured the 4 life could come into play at times. This also helps opposing Pithing Needles of course!

Blind Obedience - Say no to haste, or anytime some small life gain may be necessary to stay alive.

Celestial Flare - Say no to hexproof, or bring them in against hyper aggro to help ease the pain of drawing the game into your zone.

Dispel, Essence Scatter & Negate - More counters when needed bringing the total up to 13.

Jace, Memory Adept - Sideboard win condition to bring in against mirror matches, or again against the dreaded Slaughter Games to ensure we have ways to beat them.

Curse of the Swine - Trying it out as a 1-of to see how I like it. I know many people are toting it's strength.

I feel this deck is a good place to head into new Standard and will be able to take down most decks.

If you have any suggestions or comments, please feel free to shoot them my way! If you like the build feel free hook it up with a +1.

Cheers!

Brought this deck to it's first FNM on Theros release day. Who would've guessed it to be an aggro heavy meta?? MEEEE!!!

Round 1 vs Izzet Pyromancer: Pretty easy 2-0 here, A couple detention spheres and some control easily held him off until taking over mid games for the win.

Round 2 vs Mono Red Aggro: 2-0 again. I'm really liking the 4x Detention Sphere now, to help alongside Supreme Verdict or when I don't hit a verdict they really help keep me alive!

Round 3 vs Boros Aggro: 2-0 again, this is against a good friend of mine and very good player, but once again between the 4 of verdicts, spheres, and Celestial Flares I was able to take it in 2.

Round 4 vs Mono Red Burn: 1-2, This was a weird match up, against a player who is a buddy and literally NEVER beaten me once at FNM, and we usually joke about it, but tonight was his night! It was a ton of burn spells, with Guttersnipe, Nivmagus Elemental and the like. We were in game 3 where I could've won, but I literally drew 7 lands in 8 draws, and I got 2 and 3'd to death with Shock and Lightning Strikes lol.

Round 5 vs G/W Little Kid (SCG deck): 2-1, Game one he completely ran me over by turn 5, so I never had the chance to stabilize, but I managed after boarding in the extra Flare, Scatters and Ratchet Bombs to take games 2 and 3 from him! Was quite happy about that win.

All in all, it took me to a second place finish only behind my buddy who finally beat me in round 4, who went 5-0, so I was very happy for him!

About one card, Elspeth, Sun's Champion is unbelievably good. Until you play with her I don't think you'll understand as so many people were doubting her at first, but I can assure you, EVERY one of my opponents last night all died from her and her soldier's, sometimes with an AEtherling beside them but more often not with him. No one was doubting her after that. I'm not sure if she will retain $40 value as most PW's don't so I will probably dump the 3 I pulled and pick her up again in a few weeks when she drops. If I do that however I will need a new deck for FNM or have to rely more heavily on my other win cons.
