Maybeboard


Probably one of the biggest memes in the CEDH community that was brought into light by The Commander's Quarters, I'm proud to represent my rendition of a bad Ad Nauseam deck. Here's a quick rundown. Demonlord Belzenlok is a 1-card win condition sitting in your command zone. Once cast, you follow a combo line that immediately wins the game, even if you're tapped out. However, this deck has one major downside: If your opponents deal a certain number of damage to you, you can't win the game. For this list, the magic number is 16. Demonlord Belzenlok's trigger is not a may, and is a mandatory effect. And since every card has CMC 4 or greater, we'll flip our whole deck into our hands, and die by demonic magic.

First, the combo. Assuming you have the life requirement, here's the combo:

Step 1: Cast Demonlord Belzenlok, and use its trigger to add every nonland card in your deck to your hand.

Step 2: Using its alternate cost, cast Unmask, targeting yourself discarding Phantasmogorian.

Step 3: Activate Phantasmogorian, discarding 1 unneeded card, and with one being Dread Return, and the third being Skirge Familiar.

Step 4: Since you have discarded enough cards this turn, Cast Hollow One for free. If an opponent has a forest in play, Deepwood Legate is free. Dross Golem can possibly free depending if affinity is met if no forests are in play.

Step 5: Flashback Dread Return, sacrificing Hollow One, Belzenlok, and Deepwood Legate/Dross Golem targeting Skirge Familiar.

Step 6: Discard 6 cards with Skirge familiar for 6 black mana, with 2 of the cards being Mikaeus, the Unhallowed, and Triskellion, and use the loop to kill the table.

Now that you know the combo, let's get to the gameplan. Now, at a glance, turbo-ing out Belzenlok as fast as possible seems like the go-to gameplan. While certainly an option, the glass cannon nature of the deck leads to an all or nothing style of play. Wanting to have some sort of resilience, I instead suggest a slower approach. Though mostly lands to minimize Belzenlok damage, the non-combo cards in the list are my go-to choices for interaction and disruption. With interaction most likely prominent and always relevant, the gameplan is to sit back, maybe drop a couple of combo pieces and interaction until the coast is clear for us to attack, and try for game. Most are single target removal options, and tutors to find said cards. Now to mitigate our life total weakness, we have our 3 saving graces. Deadly Wanderings, Homicidal Saclusion, and Whip of Erebos will mitigate the damage Belzenlok will deal to us.

The maybeboard just has a lot of different possible options that can be slotted in for various situations. Since we do have a surplus of lands, we are more than welcome to swap out some lands for more key pieces. However, this does make our life total even more strict of a requirement. Feel free to add or remove any cards to fit any metas that your groups use, just be weary of your life total, and the blessings of Belzenlok will help you reap the reward of victory.
