As a preface, since Magic 2013, Innistrad, Dark Ascension, and Avacyn Restored will no longer be playable in Standard as of September 2013, I've designed this deck to use minimal cards from those sets. I'm certain that this deck will grow to be more refined as 2013 and 2014 transpire, and new sets are released. I believe this deck to be competitive as is, but it is also a work in progress. I am always open to suggestions and constructive criticism! Although, if you recommend a change, PLEASE explain why it is superior to the cards that will be replaced. Simply stating "Use this instead of that" is not helpful to me.
This deck's primary intent is to overwhelm the opponent with a plethora of creatures that continue to grow in power and ability as the game progresses, due to the "Battalion" utility. This deck also utilizes enchantments such as Assemble the Legion and Gleam of Battle to further aid in the eligibility of creature's Battalion ability, and to simply aid in overwhelming the opponent.
Boros Elite
and Legion Loyalist are used in mass in this deck to allow for an early game show of force on the battlefield. The odds are significant that one of the two cards will be able to be played on the very first turn. Boros Charm can be used early on or later in the game to prevent damage to creatures, or to deal a bit of extra damage to a player.
Frontline Medic
,
Firemane Avenger
, and
Tajic, Blade of the Legion
are also prominent within this deck, as their Battalion utility can produce devastating results for the opponent. Boros Reckoners exist primarily as defenders, as they will deter an individual from attacking. Lastly, Aurelia, the Warleader was included in this deck because, aside from being a powerful creature, she will allot you an additional combat phase each turn.
After a few turns transpire, this deck begins to show its true lethal potential. I'd suggest dropping Legion's Initiative as early as possible, not only to further empower the creatures, but to use as a safeguard as well, as it can prevent anything catastrophic from occurring to creatures in mass. Assemble the Legion will also ensure a constant show of force on the battlefield, and will ensure that no creature will attack without inciting its Battalion ability. Boros Charm can be used as a failsafe here, as it can make all creatures indestructible for a turn.
Aurelia's Fury
is another remarkable failsafe in this deck, as dealing a small amount of damage to opponent's life and creatures will cause those creatures to tap, and prevent the opponent from casting noncreature spells; thus clearing a path for significant damage to be dealt. It can also be used to prevent enemy creatures from attacking, or to destroy enemy creatures all together.
I chose to include Gideon, Champion of Justice in this deck, as it synergises extraordinarily in a few ways. Using Gideon, Champion of Justice as an indestructible human soldier may give you an extra push in the event that you do not have enough attacking creatures to allow Battalion utilities to engage. More importantly, Gideon, Champion of Justice's ultimate ability can be utilized with devastating effect when used alongside Legion's Initiative's ability. Doing this will clear the enemy's board entirely, but will allow all of your creatures to return to the battlefield ready for action upon the next upkeep, including any tokens.
