Baylens Bnuuys AKA Bunny Storm: Primer WIP {R} {G} {W}

Hare Apparent is a fun new little guy I wanted to build around. I thought I was making a funny Bunny deck. Turns out Hare + Baylen enables creature storm like Animar without trying. So what happens if we lean into it? Let's find out!

About the Deck

Why, Baylen and Naya {R} {G} {W}

I spent a lot of time looking at legendaries and color pairings for this deck. I started Selesnya helmed by Cadira, Caller of the Small. I ended up split between either Bant with Chulane, Teller of Tales or Naya with Baylen, the Haymaker. The trade off is losing Chulane's aggressive draw power for Baylen's faster mana generation and a more aggressive wincon in red ping effects. Also bunny commander is legitimately good, cute, and thematic. 3 wins!

Pros

• You like creature based decks.
• You think a Relentless Rats style creature is cool.
• You like assembling an engine.
• You like piloting a storm deck with many emerging lines of play.
• You like seeing every available surface buried under your ever expanding and strong bunny lineage.

Cons

• You don't like strategies weak to sweepers.
• You hate rabbits.
• You don't like game plans moderately dependent on the commander.
• You don't like Family Guy.
• You don't want to cast a 2cmc rabbit and watch Purphoros incinerate your opponents for 20 damage.

The Game Plan

The Plan

Audio warning: Here is a link to a Youtube Video better describing the deck strategy. Mentally this is where you need to be to pilot the deck.

The general Plan is:

• Ramp and play Hares
• Play cost reducers like Aluren or Pearl Medallion
• Play Baylen and more hares to start storming.
• Use Baylen's abilities to generate mana and dig deeper through the deck. Smooth out this process by finding additional card draw like Beast Whisperer or Skullclamp
• Casting Hares use ping effects like Impact Tremors to kill the table

Creature storm

Aluren is clearly the strongest cost reducer in the deck and let's us break Baylen, the Haymaker completely. In order to storm you need Baylen, the Haymaker + enough Hare Apparent for your tokens to go mana and card draw positive. (In a vacuum I'm reaching this around the 4th Hare) The most efficient win condition I've found so far is damage from creatures entering through Impact Tremors or Purphoros, God of the Forge

Wincons

The main win condition: Ping effects

Purphoros, God of the Forge - The gold standard for a ping from creatures entering.

Impact Tremors - Low cost and efficient

Warleader's Call - A newer version of this effect worth playtesting. May be swapped for Agate Instigator which is more tutorable and fewer color pips.

Throne of the God-Pharaoh - I'd consider this a pseudo ping effect with our ability to tap tokens on demand

Goblin Bombardment - Both removal and a win condition with a critical mass of bunnies. Also serves as a rattlesnake to deter board wipes.

The backup plan: Alpha strike

There are several cards that enable Overrun wins as a backup.

Craterhoof Behemoth - Hoof needs no introduction.

Shared Animosity - Hoof lite.

Card Choice

Creatures

• Hare Apparent - "My ancestors are smiling at me, Imperials. Can you say the same?"
• Valley Questcaller - In playtesting this rabbit is gas. When you have a draw engine out like Beast Whisperer and cast a hare apparent, it's important to stack your triggers.
  1. Cast a Hare apparent. Valley Questcaller Scry effect triggers.
  2. Scry first to set up your next draw.
  3. Hare triggers creating tokens.
  4. Use Baylen's ability to tap the new tokens and draw.
  5. Use Baylen's ability to tap the new tokens and cast a Hare.
  6. Repeat step one
  The scry effect turns every Baylen draw into a mini Preordain.

Just 2 creatures and our commander. Shortest list ever lol.

Threats

• Craterhoof Behemoth - Has probably killed more tables than any other wincon in green.
• Goblin Bombardment - Both removal and a win condition with a critical mass of bunnies. Also serves as a rattlesnake to deter board wipes.
• Purphoros, God of the Forge - Converts Hare's into thermo-nuclear warheads.
• Shared Animosity - Hoof lite
• Throne of the God-Pharaoh - A pseudo ping effect. Tapping our tokens is essential making this deadly.
• Thrumming Stone - The OG for the original Relentless Rats. With enough Hares in the deck, casting one let's us storm without Baylen.
• Warleader's Call - a redundant effect for consistency. May be switched for the more tutorable Agate Instigator

Tutors

• Chord of Calling - Instant speed tap creatures to tutor. incredible card for the deck. My only reservation is the triple green pip cost.
• Eldritch Evolution - Incredible tutor for the deck. Sac a 2cmc hare to get the best payoffs in the deck Purphoros, God of the Forge or Beast Whisperer.
• Enlightened Tutor - Grabs key pieces from combo lines like Aluren, wincons like Purphoros, God of the Forge, to card draw like Skullclamp
• Finale of Devastation - Versatile creature tutor scales into a game finisher backup ability. What's not to like.

Cost Reduction

• Aluren - Priority number 1! Breaks the deck and enables full creature storm casting Hares for free!
• Pearl Medallion - Makes each Hare cost 1 white mana. Every 2 tokens you tap with Baylen can now cast a Hare, netting you mana to cast more Hares. Oops more storm!!

Other reduction effects I'm considering for consistency.

• Oketra's Monument

Sacrifice Outlets

• Goblin Bombardment - Already described above under threats
• Phyrexian Altar - Enables out creature storm incredibly. With a cost reducer and Baylen out, tokens can be tapped to make mana and then be sacrificed to make even more! It also lets us generate mana in an emergency to cast interaction or protection.

• Cavern of Souls - Counter magic protection is a must.
• Shifting Woodland - Incredible mid to late game card. let's us copy any key combo piece in our grave to try and storm off and close the game.
• Urza's Saga - Literally here just to tutor the GOAT Skullclamp
• Scavenger Grounds - Disruption for grave strategies.
