B/G Mindwrack Hydra-Frog

Standard* BG (Golgari) Midrange

larcewayreth

Sideboard

Tweeked my BG standard deck. Took out the rotated cards and threw in a few Hydras with Embalm. This is a deck for FNM, not the Pro Tour. Just wanted to make it legal again, as I may want to play at fnm or game day.

Our beater is Mindwrack Demon : a beefy monster for 4cmc whose downside isnt hard to overcome. He can drop on turn 3 with Deathcap, even if it's a bit risky at times (casting Corpse Churn in repsonse to his delirium trigger on your upkeep will nearly always get you 4 card types in your yard if you need to avoid the life loss and probably put a creature in your hand as well). Late game, if Frog is on board, this guy draws you a card nearly everytime he's cast. and he's a Flampler... So yeah.

The Gitrog Monster is the Frog at the top of our curve, giving us a big creature and helping to refuel our hand. He mucks up the board while Mindwrack wins the game.

A varied removal suite should help keep threats off the board while adding 3 card types to our yard; the most relevant for delirium being enchantment with 3 copies of Dead Weight. Ultimate Price does a lot of work in standard right now, enough for me to start the game with it main board. Our Sideboard will tailor our removal to the match by possibly bringing in extra Flaying Tendrils or even swapping in some copies of Grasp of Darkness.

Lambholt Pacifist   gives us board presence early. It can flip if we're holding instants in hand, choosing between casting Corpse Churn or Ultimate Price on our opponent's turn. If Mindwrack is on board, it can even attack in its human form if need be. Seeing it transform into Lambholt Butcher   feels good. It's a splashable, conditional, and possibly larger Kalonian Tusker. And that's fine with me. I like this card.

Traverse the Ulvenwald is a great card. Fixes mana early, let's us run a land light, and tutors for another Mindwrack or a Frog later on.

Autumnal Gloom   may be good against decks playing too much spot removal, which has been common in what I've seen of my meta. Seems good as delirium is pretty easy in this deck, and this helps. Its card type is relevant and it can get cards in the yard if need be.

Deathcap Cultivator is a rather underestimated dork that helps us mana fix, ramp, and becomes a relevant blocker later when these things matter less. Even so, I started not wanting to see him in my hand as much as he was popping up, and I think this was a sign that ramp wasn't as important as the midrange aspect of the deck. If he was a 1/3 it would be different, but with his fragile piker body, I decided to Reduce his count to 3.

Evolving Wilds helps start our delirium early, and can make a turn 3 Mindwrack a bit less risky. They also fuel the frog if drawn late game.

Hissing Quagmire is a nice rattlesnake pressence that may keep the heat off you if you start to run out of gas. It may also catch your opponent off guard and trade up with its Deathtouch.

Ob Nixilis Reignited adds another card type to the deck. And he draws us cards and kills stuff, 'Nuff said.

Honored Hydra This is a budget card I added in place of the cards from Khans and Origins that rotated. It seems like a good card to have hit the bin. Pretty big fatty with a cheap embalm. Consider it a place holder.

Thanks for checking it out. I welcome any comments or suggestions.
