Originally used Animar, Soul of Elements as the commander, however Animar, Soul of Elements is a 1/1 to start with, and I play with a lot of people who really like red. They tend to fireball, or lightning bolt, or some variation of the sort, long before he can be effective at making things cheaper, hence I didn't get the chance to utilize him properly. After changing commanders to Surrak Dragonclaw games go way more consistent, and my game plans aren't as easily thwarted early in the game. Animar, Soul of Elements is still a fun card to have within the deck though.

Just so people know, due to MTG rules on Animar, Soul of Elements works with hydras as well. The player must declare a value for , thereby replacing the and altering the CMC) Animar, Soul of Elements then reduces how much colorless mana is required to cast a Creature, by however many +1/+1 counters are on Animar, Soul of Elements.
Example: Animar, Soul of Elements has 4 +1/+1 Counters on it. You then declare a value of 8 for the on a Hungering Hydra, setting the CMC of the Hungering Hydra to 9 or . Animar, Soul of Elements says you'll pay less due to its 4 +1/+1 counters, so you'll only be required to tap to cast an 8/8 Hungering Hydra.

Hydras can and will get ludicrously big, depending on how many +1/+1 counters are on Animar, Soul of Elements.
Example: If you have 10 lands, and 50 +1/+1 counters on Animar, Soul of Elements, you could declare as 59 changing CMC to 59 and cast a Hungering Hydra as a 59/59 for .
