Casual Aggro Budget Devotion Dice First strike Mono-Red

PinnedPhoenix

I took two silly effects and made an aggro deck with combo-like synergies. it's cheap, funny, easy to play, and surprisingly good.

mono red's greatest weakness is at least arguably card draw, the lack of which forces it into either burn decks or sligh aggro with consistent, fast hitting compositions. I really wanted to build a deck around Barbarian Class, so I included aggressive spells with card draw effects to stall for time and make something happen while digging for it. here's a detailed breakdown.

Fearless Pup - a very good pupper. 1/1 first strike with a booster effect for one mana. use to annoy your opponent and chump block although, with the right opening hand, you can absolutely voltron this lil guy into a game-ending threat. for example:

turn 1: mountain, Fearless Pup -- turn 2: mountain, Thunderous Might on Fearless Pup -- turn 3: mountain, Chaos Dragon -- turn 4: mountain, Barbarian Class boosted to level 2, Ancestral Anger on Fearless Pup, +2/+0 and menace from Chaos Dragon's roll on Fearless Pup.

now you have a cute lil doggo swinging for 9/1 with first strike, trample, and menace on turn four. it's unlikely you'll get this exact, perfect combo, but some variation of it will happen all the time. don't underestimate this pupper.

Dragonkin Berserker - first strike is always nice, and its synergy with Chaos Dragon is legitimately dangerous. with a lucky draw you can reasonably hope to have three dragons on the board by turn five, and the fact that it lowers all boast costs with dragons in play means you can swing hard with Fearless Pup consistently. with a Barbarian Class in play, the level 2 upgrade, activated by a Chaos Dragon, will let Dragonkin Raider swing relatively safely as a buff creature with first strike and menace, allowing you to proliferate dragons turn by turn. a powerful and potentially game-defining card.
Birgi, God of Storytelling   - improves mana economy, lets you summon two dragons with Dragonkin Berserker or hit comically hard with Fearless Pup, and doubles as Harnfel, Horn of Bounty   for when you have mana to spare and need to get cards on the board fast. fits nicely into the support role and, with the right board state, can easily win you the game.
Barbarian Class - a super fun one drop which causes you to roll with advantage, lets you buff your attackers whenever you roll, and can grant all your creatures haste. synergizes with the whole deck extremely well, especially boast-based cards, for reasons I'll explain briefly.

Boast is a fun and flavorful mechanic but it's not really all that good. the reason why is that you have to swing in order to proc it, which means defending comes at an opportunity cost and you run the risk of losing your boasters in combat. Barbarian Class mitigates this problem to some extent by granting your boasters +2 attack and, almost more importantly, menace. since both of the boasters in this deck have first strike, they become surprisingly difficult to block, which means they become difficult to kill, allowing you to boast with them far more consistently. this also applies to the attack-based dice roll effects on Chaos Channeler and Delina, Wild Mage, and most of the creatures here also stand to benefit from the haste effect at level three. worth noting that you're allowed to stack multiple Barbarian Classes on the field, and while the level 3 effect doesn't stack with itself, the level 1 and 2 effects both do, allowing you to roll three dice per roll, for example, or buff two creatures on one roll.

Barbarian Class is the keystone card. everything else is either trying to get here or trying to do something good with it once it arrives.

Chaos Dragon - a 4/4 flier for 3 mana that can't not attack and yet can normally only attack a given player an average of 45% of the time (tie goes to the opponent). a puzzling and frustrating card at face value, it gets a huge boost in viability from Barbarian Class, triggers the damage boost on Barbarian Class every turn, and synergizes beautifully with Dragonkin Berserker, plus the two red in its mana cost helps Thunderous Might and Purphoros, God of the Forge considerably. if you're lucky enough to draw a Barbarian Class and a Chaos Dragon in your opening hand, you're practically guaranteed to swing for six flying and menace on turn three. that feels good.
Chaos Channeler - a great creature for when you're high on mana and low on cards. with some luck you can play an alarming amount of spells pretty quickly using this guy. his effect synergizes with Birgi, God of Storytelling  's mana discount very well.
Delina, Wild Mage - maybe the most comically luck-based card in the deck. combined with Barbarian Class' second effect, it's theoretically possible to swing with three extra Chaos Dragons in one turn, all buffed with +2 attack and menace. that's too much fun to pass up. get it on the board alongside two second level Barbarian Classes to end the game by turn 5.
Prophetic Flamespeaker - a voltron-worthy card if ever there was one. throw a Thunderous Might on this puppy and swing away to boost your tempo and do some serious damage.
Thunderous Might - really helpful card in a deck full of red cards, ten of which have two devotion to red, and first and double strikers. it'll make for hard swings and keep your opponent leaning on the ropes.
Ancestral Anger - a nifty little one drop that'll make your creatures hit harder without costing you a card draw. discreetly takes up space in the deck and moves things along to the endgame by giving you a small but substantial offensive and tempo advantage. That Birgi makes this card cost no mana at all ices it as a solid addition.
Purphoros, God of the Forge - doesn't meld quite so well as to include more than one, but the deck's monolatric devotion to red means it'll be a creature very quickly if not the moment it's played, its creature-heavy composition will let you proc the 2 damage effect consistently, and the +1/+0 boost, while a touch expensive manawise, works well with all the first strikers, double strikers, and fliers here. it's also literally a very expensive card--at 17+$, it accounts for a full third of the deck's cost. feel free to skip it and just throw in another mountain. money aside though, it's a hard card not to splash.

this deck is easy to use, (mostly) cheap, aggressive, and fun as hell. open to any and all suggestions for improvement. give it a shot if you want and a +1 if you like the design!
