I do so dearly love Spark Trooper and his Ilk. A pay 4 for 6/1 lifelink, trample and haste is so good, never you mind the fact we lose it at end of turn. Heck; its unlikely to survive combat!

Another style of card I find amusing? Boros Reckoner and Spitemare. If these guys take damage, the deal that much damage to a target of your choice, making them ideal blockers or combo peices for other decks - read Voltron or Naya Arena style decks.

So as a lot of people have done I decided to design a modern around them. You have your damage spells of Warleader's Helix, Lightning Helix and Lightning Bolt as well as the basic enemy field control of exiling things - thank you white.

Blaze Commando is a card that could make a great power peice ino this deck as it is able to generate more chump blockers. But if my opponent is heavy on the heavy creatures, sideboarding Banisher Priest for this could make sense.

Of course this deck isn't perfect. I can empty my hand far too quickly, I can end up not having any late game threats or responses or i can simply end up not drawing a damage spell. Here's hoping that you, the community of tapped out can provide some insight into how i can fine tune this deck and make it vaguely more usable.

Boros Charm is a multifunctional beast of an instant like almost all charms are. The pay 2 to deal 4 damage is remarkable in itself, but temporary indestructibility for those centerpiece damage accumulators Boros Reckoner + Spitemare makes this card a necessary inclusion.

Lightning Bolt... Anyone who doubts the relevance of this card clearly hasn't experienced enough MTG. the quintessential Red burn spell. for 3 damage; this card makes the cut.

Lightning Helix is a fantastic card. Right up there with lightning bolt in my unhumble opinion. to deal 3 damage. to gain three life. And as a single card instead of two? This is useful.

Red Sun's Zenith is the pinnacle of what a burn spell can do. for X damage to any target, exiles a killed creature and then the spell is shuffled into your deck for later use.

Warleader's Helix for a reasonable CMC creates an 8 hit point difference between you and your opponent. I cant see a reason not to play it so it made the cut.

Sooooo I dont have all that much in the way of threat response. Path to Exile and Stasis Snare both kinda good in the way they deal with things.

Stasis Snare is an enchantment exile that I can cast at instant speed so Yay! It's instantly more useful than its alternative Oblivion Ring. But at one more specific mana to cast, is it really worth the trade off? I figured it could be.

Path to Exile... The classic. As quintessential as Lightning Bolt it has to make the grade.

Ajani Vengeant : This guy is the embodiment of the concept of this deck. He IS lightning helix in a bottle. That alone makes him quite useful, but the fact the my opponent may designate him as a target instead of myself or a creature of mine makes him a step further useful.

Banisher Priest is probably the best at what he (or she) does. CMC for 2/2 Exile an enemy under it. As a creature though he is a lot easier for an opponent to get rid of. Not sure what to do here... best hope i have a Boros Charm in hand.

Browbeat: You know how I mentioned running out of cards in hand? Yeah. This is totally worth it. Like Vexing Devil this card lets an opponent choose whether or not they take damage or let you gain significant advantage. Definitely something I will run if I ever get a set.

Deflecting Palm: For CMC this card does a lot of good for me. If I disappointingly have no creatures staying on the field as blockers, then then card handily acts as a Boros Reckoner or Spitemare chump blocker

Slagstorm: A fabulously brutal card. I won't overly mind it dealing damage to me as I should be gaining life from other spell's, but it might even prove useful to deal three damage to each creature on the battlefield and let Boros Reckoner and Spitemare deal all the damage back to my opponent.

By no means should you feel like I dont want to run these cards. Please; if you think i should then tell me and help me weigh up the options as to why they may be better or worse

The Damage I Could Do

Barbed Lightning doesn't muck around. At CMC for 3 damage its not so useful I agree. But at CMC for 6 damage total potentially towards a player, I quite enjoy this card. Turns out not as useful as I initially considered. Red Sun's Zenith won out.

Blasphemous Act is a boardwipe of legendary (conditional) proportions. But if I'm dealing 13 damage to a Spitemare and then deal damamge off that at my opponents then its highly worth it in a competitive sideboard.

Comet Storm is basically a one shot Red Sun's Zenith that can hit a few dudes. Useful as a game ender if I have a couple of Reckoners or Mares in play.

Chain Lightning is classic. Pay for 3 damage where the only downsides are it is sorcery speed, and your opponent could copy it if they had the right mana. Its about a 6/10 in usefulness. 7/10 usefulness.

Devil's Play is an alright card. Gives you two uses but only at sorcery speed. 6.5/10 usefulness.

Lava Spike is strictly better than Chain Lightning. Yes it has the "Arcane" subtype, but its not a huge issue. Speed is still an issue though so a decent 7.5/10 usefulness.

Lightning Strike/Searing Spear are functionally equivalent and both fairly average cards. Not good enough to mainboard, but not terrible enough to ignore. 7.5/10 usefulness

Pulse of the Forge is a very under-used spell. mana for four damage to a player, with a chance to bounce the spell back to your hand is fantastic!! Less so in this deck as I aim not to have less life than the opponent, but if things are going badly this could prove a useful mechanic. 8/10 usefulness.

Rift Bolt is a great card to suspend: It's hard cast is terrible but first turn suspend means that you have a floating threat the opponent has to prepare for. 8/10 for usefulness.

Shock is another highly used and very average card. About 6/10 usefulness

The Lands I Could Use

Nothing wrong with any of these lands (except price), i just don't know if I really need to run them. So far in play testing I don't.

Arid Mesa could give some deck thinning.Clifftop Retreat is just a dual land.

The Creatures I Could Add

All these creatures fit the theme or add a degree of fun/effeciency I enjoy.

Ball Lightning is a slightly cheaper Spark Trooper without lifelink. Big downside is that it needs which could be unlikely.

Figure of Destiny FOR THE WIN!!! This guy is so good. He just doesn't get enough play ever. Not quite thematic for this deck, but i like the guy himself.

Grim Lavamancer is a great little addition to any burn deck that chews through nonpermaments. A little slow in modern but still something I considered and recognize someone may suggest.

Kitchen Finks is in color, a chump blocker and a "modern staple". Also relatively pricey and something that would take up a slot I could devote to theme.

Mogg Maniac is a card I only just discovered in the design of this deck. He fits the theme well but at CMC for 1/1 and he can only target opponents he just didn't make mainboard.

Vexing Devil is the classic burn deck creature. Your opponent gets the choice of facing a 4/3 for or losing 4 life. A tad pricier but maybe if I can acquire some I will run them.

The Last Five Cards

Divine Deflection fits the theme of this deck well, and can really fill a slot. Prevent damage for and deal that damage to the opponent is distinctly worth a slot. After play testing - slash while im acquiring other cards - this could easily be in my deck. 9/10 usefulness.

Manamorphose: Lets me turn 2 mana into two other mana. Also draw a card. 7/10 useful but doesn't fit the theme. kinda want that draw though....

Oblivion Ring: It didn't make mainboard because stasis snare is better.

Pyromancer's Ascension is a high power, high value, high cost card that would turn this deck into an nigh unstoppable force.

Scout's Warning : This kind of thing is a little tricky. Do I want something that lets me flash dudes in? Yes. Do I want to draw a card? Yes. Do I want to devote deck space to this thing that needs another card to be useful? No. General usefulness: 7/10. Usefulness here: 3/10

That right about ends this talk. Id appreciate any and all input on this matter so I can fine tune this beast. :)
